Suggestions for Rekordbox updates?

Casper Østergaard
posted this on September 07, 2011 15:31

Couldn't find this anywhere, so thought I might do one after I have been using Rekordbox for a while....

First of all: LOVE the program, but as many other (new) programs it has potential to be better....

1) Sync with folders on your harddrive. Automatically search for new files at startup.

2) "key" feature - finds the key of the tracks.

3) editi/cut in audio tracks... a litlle audio editor would be awesome!!!

if there is a thread for this I apologize....

i would like rekordbox  to find the genre of the tracks  online when you upload them onto it  .little things like this pioneer saves the dj's a lot of time messing around on  rekordbox  and more time on there decks .

After relocating my entire library to my internal hard drive on the weekend, I'd like a batch find and replace mechanism rather than having to use the currently relocator, I had to relocate every file when all that had really changed was the beginning of the file path.

How is any software going to do this? i have no clue? how is a piece of software going to tell me if my music is House Garage or Progressive etc?

Are there such services available on the Internet?

i have done this before and i think selected all and pointed to the file path (i think) although i'm not sure how i did it i know it can be done.

^^ I Don't see any reason if the algorithm is written correctly why it can't grab that information from Discogs or Beatport (but then most music purchased from Beatport has the genre in the ID3 tag anyway.

Also, I think with RekordBox Pioneer really needs to learn how to walk before they try to run.

Re: Relocation, there is a feature in RekordBox that when relocation missing files, it can attempt to scan for and automatically relink other missing files as well, but it only works if for music that's stored in the same directory, I was able to do it for music on the same album, but my music structure follows the standard iTunes: Album Artist\Album\## Title.mp3 pathing, so it was a long and tedious rainy day process.

I'd like to see some basic features get added as well, CMD + I to bring up the info pane, ability to Tab through fields on the Info pane and finally with drop down menus, the ability to punch in the first few characters and have it jump to that option.

SCRIBBLER'S REKORDBOX WISH LIST:

- Syncing with devices - from computer to device. with options, i.e sync all, or just sync this particular playlist etc. A MUST! I feel soo let down by the surprising lack of this feature. (I personally put tracks into multiple playlists (for different moods/occasions) so having to remember which ones you've put tracks in on the computer and do it again for the device is extremely tedious. Syncing is a must.

- For a track to be able to tell you which playlists it is a part of.

- To not crash/stall so much (v1.5) it's routine. (makes me anxious to go down the laptop link direction)

- To be able to control laptop rekordbox browsing with the rotary wheel (like serato does) [or is this already possible?]

On CDJ display:

    - It'd be nice to have the search function available at all times regardless of what folder/playlist you're in

    - Be able to have more categories on display at once in the list view, i.e Colour & Rating & Comments, there's plenty of space on the screen - hell... why not allow it to be customizable. Just a way to get as much of that great information that you spend loads of time inputing, but to be all accessible in a similar fashion to the desktop version..obviously limited to the screen size, but currently on the cdj's it's nowhere near as easy to navigate and sort whilst displaying multiple bits of information about each track in a list for quick browsing.

Apart from that, nice first go Pioneer, I have confidence that you'll get it up to scratch soon. It has been 2 years though now.

What USB device are you using? For some reason it's dog slow with flash (at least it is for me), but you can see a difference with HDD, with a USB HDD you can see it export and skip over the existing tracks. But yeah, my device exports are usually done overnight.

thanks for the insight. I use a USB stick, so will give it a go with a HDD and see if that speeds things up. But still auto-syncing that doesn't waste time scanning everything when there may only be a handful of additions, would be more logical, and what is the norm for most syncing applications. Thanks for the tips.

Yup, this is exactly what I meant when I say basic functionality. I've said it many times before, but RB feels like a 0.7 or 0.8 release rather that a 1.5. Let me know how you go, curious to see if I'm the only one who has problems with USB flash.

Yeap, open up the collection view, right click on the heading and add DJ Play Count to the list of columns, click once to select the track you want to edit, wait a few seconds (so it's not a double click) and then click again on that tracks count to edit it.

Feature request:

HOLDING "BROWSE" TAKES YOU TO CURRENTLY PLAYING LIST

Navigating on the CDJ: Info gives you the info on the current playing track, browse lets you go throw various menus. But when you do that, you lose the ability yo see the list that your current track is in - i.e what the track would be if you skipped forwards or back! this is quite frustrating if you're playing in a playlist/deep in the menus, and jump in and out to search/browse. I would recommend holding "browse" takes you back to the current playing list.

In Traktor you can move forward/backward by 4/8/16/32 beats along the track and set the cue points very quickly. Doing this i can be sure i can put a cue point right before a break without counting 1,2,3,4 from the beginning of the track.

May i suggest to implement such a feature like this? It would mean you can set the beatgrid and move quickly along the track, set the cue points by multiples of 4 beats without making mistakes or counting manually.

I find it incredibly useful having the Rekordbox/USB feature, saves burning CDs all the time... However 95% of clubs are still rocking 1000s and looks like they will be for the forseeable future! Rekordbox does not have the ability to burn discs, so this leaves me having to manually create discs, by making a playlist of the tracks i want in RB, then on each one clicking 'Show in Explorer', then pasting it to another location to burn. This is hugely annoying! So yeah, I'd either like RB to be able to burn, or to select multiple files in RB, and click 'Show in Explorer' to a batch; so it opens an explorer window with all those files selected.

Also, it would be amazing if RB would write the tags we put in (Artist, Track, Album, Key, etc) to the actual file as opposed to just a database file. That way when moving stuff into other software; Traktor you don't have to start from scratch

@Dave > The majority of the tags are written to the file; some are kept internal for the database as they're not supported by the metadata for that filetype.

Please add a feature for "scan in place" witouth requiring the export. I'm (alsmost neurotically) structured in my file-naming and foldering, and I would love to save playlist and waveform data to my source drive. Right now the only option is to use the CDJ-2000 itself and just keep it running all day long for the wave data. Still doesn't solve the Cue point / Waveform data though...

SYNCING is a must have! I cannot believe tracks are not synced with iTunes (when I make changes in iTunes, I have to make similar changes to RB) - This is a deal-breaker.

Also SYNCING from RB to the HDD/Flash drive you use must be automatic.

Until then, I would rather keep burning CDs

Yeah angus, i had it happen once and that was enough to scare me, I was mixing home just playing around, Had it disconnect a session, reconnect, disconnect, reconnect, and finally once i killed airport, it stayed connected. There should be a way for RB to make sure it only communicates via ethernet port and not through wireless. I am sure no one in their right mind is performing live via a wireless connection to their music collection

It would be nice to have a Playlist Sync between both iTunes <-> Rekordbox as well as SYNC with Rekordbox <->USB Drives. That way if I add new songs to my playlists sorted by Key (Using Mixed In Key) I can just sync it with rekordbox then sync rekordbox with my USB drives so that it just adds the songs missing from playlists on the drive itself. Please guys this would be great! Especially Rekordbox <-> USB!!!!

@PULSE >>> that box only appears when you drag a song directly from RB's collection or RB's playlist to device's playlist. but if I drag a song directly from my comp files to my device's playlist. it adds the duplicate without warning. ( also if i drag the file from my computer and add it to a playlist or collection on RB (not the devise) it adds it w/o warning)    :(((

the way i manage my mzk is: every time i download track from internet. i drag the file it self and drop it directly to my device (SD card) on RB witch this also adds the file to my collection in RB and analyzes it.

I just bought a pair of CDJ 200 n DJM 900: I used to add all my songs to my device by bridging iTunes trough RB since i have all my mzk organize on iTunes but about a week after using RB it stopped updating my iTunes library.      ex: i go to iTunes right now, create a new playlist, then go to RB bridge an the new playlist in iTunes won't show up in RB bridge (very frustrating...)

Help!!!!

@OscarB > We don't suggest adding files to devices directly without going through the process of importing them to your collection first.  If you dump a file directly to a device it doesn't surprise me you're getting duplicates.  Either way, you still only wind up with one file on the device.

As for the iTunes bridge, have you tried pressing the refresh button beside the iTunes library within Rekordbox?

Hello Rekordboxers,

As I get into the Rekordbox thing, I tried to add loops to some of my tracks.

So when you want to loop something, you have to call the memory. Too bad it has to stop the music so it can loop.

Imagine this.. Im playing a track and i want it to loop in the midle as I play the track. It is somewhat akward that Pioneer hasnt realized this before, but its not functional if you have to stop the track for it to loop in the desired memory.

I see this more or less like in Ableton Live, when you program loops, and has the track is being played it just loops were you told it to loop without having to stop.

Please consider this as it will boost interest from Traktor and Live users.

Best regards,

André

@Andre > If you load those memory points to hot cues, they can be played immediately when you trigger the hot cue.  Unfortunately the player currently has to buffer those memory points when they're called, thus not allowing seamless playback.

@Pulse: Got it! Still with the hot cues you have to be very "tempo accurate" so it doesnt sound bad.

Will it be possible to add this feature on the next firmware update/ software update? Do you understand what I mean with boosting interest from Tktr and Live users?

Will there be any Video updates in the future, the ability to play and mix Music Videos? Load the Video files into rekordbox, use the video out on the computer and mix them using the controls on the CDJ-850/900/2000. That would really blow the doors off Scratch Live!!!

I would love to see Rekordbox automatically load the hot cues so that you don't get that annoying delay the first time you press them. It means that you have to load a track, press A,B,C so that the cues load and then get into the mix... Why?

that would be more of a CDJ suggestion, RB cannot control what auto loads into the hot starts ABC. I do agree with you 100% though, It is such a PAIN IN THE ASS to have to load my hot starts on every track I load. I actually have a couple of guys that won't use the decks alone because of this, they jump in and out of tracks and hot starts quick so they just keep using sera to since it does auto load the cue points

Hi

Ok, so these are my sugestions:

First, the allready talked problem of the loops in memory not playing when playback gets to the loop beggining. i think you need to change this, cause other way its no good having 10 loops in memory if you choose one of them and the track stops.

My suggestion would be something like creating a new screen on the down bottom of the LCD, where you could select if you wanted for example loop in memory slot 3 to be ON and play like a loop when playback gets there. So something like pressing Memory and then 10 slots would appear on the bottom of the LCD with on and off.  This ofcourse would require cdj firmware update, but is it doable?

Now, the also allready talked auto detect key. This feature would also be very good. Import a track, analyze and automatically assign the key of the track into track info, using the normal keys letters ( Dm for example ) or the Camelot Wheel numbers and letters ( but i think that in this case you would have to pay to Mixed in Key :/ )

Auto Call the HOT CUES of each track would also be an interesting feature.

On the Collection Pane being able to see to which playlists the tracks are assigned to. I have looked and i think this option is missing. I have just put 257 tracks into several playlists, and on the playlists i have 256 ( i forgot one ). That feature would save a lot of time, instead of assigning them all to the playlists again.

Today while testing again Rekordbox connect via pro dj link with lan cable to a CDJ i found out that you cant use Adjust Beat Grid, even to a track that is not playing. Why This?? I think its awkward, if you can add hot cues, cues & loops into the memory of the track that is playing ( which by the way is a fantastic feature ) why not be able to adjust beat grid of tracks not playing?? You may want to play a track and realize that the grid is not right and give it a small adjustment.

Finally...for me this 1.5.1 version has been 100% stable so far, using usb sticks or Pro Dj Link.

Really need that when pressing the disk in the devices list, and selecting UPDATE - then it actually works. As it is now my disk's dont update so if I have added files to my Itunes since last update, I have to go to the "bridge" and copy the whole folders.

another issue is: if you have a structure with folders and subfolders in Itunes for playlists, you have to copy the whole Folder - to get teh subfolders with playlists updated....

until that works for me, Record Box is taking my time :-)

I REALLY  WANT to be able to see 2 sorting columns.

I would like to sort by BPM firstly but then see the KEY of each track next to this without clicking into each file.

There is a sort of work around for this that I know of but not really. I use Mixed in Key which can tag my comments field with KEY-BPM but that then only enables me to sort by the Key first, I need to be able to see a list sorted by BPM first then KEY make sense? If mixed in Key wrote the comments field as BPM-KEY I'd be sorted but they DON'T.

Am I missing something is this already possible?

@ dave. this is currently possible however there are work arounds.

for example. you can create playlists within certain bpm ranges. House 120-125bpm for example, within this playlist you click on the key column to order your tracks by key and right-click this column and select 'renumber track order'.

when you export this playlist your tracks will now be arranged by key (so no need to sort) and you already know the bpm range. you also still have the ability to perform a further 'sort' within this playlist if you need it, for example 'early, mid set, peak, vocal etc', or genre, colour or whatever you want really.

i've used this method for the last year and found it to be the best for me.

I do not think auto call for the hot cues would be a good idea . It would erase the current hot cues ! What are u going to do if u want to use hot cues from different tracks ? NO WAY !

Hot cue banks ?  NO !

Many dj's choose their hot cues on the fly.

The time it takes to call out the hot cues is not that long. It is made this way for a good reason.

when you load a new track in serato/traktor etc.... it loads the hot cues with it, it would be the same thing

I am sure Pioneer can put in the menu whether or not you want hot starts to load on track load. I have not met one dj yet (I know plenty) that jump around tracks via hot starts, instead they are all questioning why the hot starts do not load on track load, When I explain to them you have to call them up, They all just say, "Thanks, but ill just stick with serato, I want my hot starts instantly" which is my opinion too, When I mix from track to track in quick mix sets, having to load hot starts takes away seconds from each mix I need to setup, I could be a lot quicker if they just loaded automatically.

Another downfall is if you have already started a track and wanted to jump to a "c" start for instance, you now can't because its playing live. Then if you hit C thinking you loaded it, it now jumps to a totally different track with now easy way to get back other then hitting CUE and starting over.

In my opinion (and others I talk to), Having to call up a cue nowadays in cdj's has way more cons then pros, Back in the 800 and 1000 cd only decks it made sense and thats what needed to be done, but so many dj's come from serato and tractor and expect them to auto load, having to call them up is a pretty big negative for people who use all the hot starts in a lot of their tracks

What I wish is there was custom exports for playlist text files that's different from the column order, it's a bit cumbersome to have to reformat it for my radio show, it'd be really handy to be able to export in this format (punctuation and all): 1. Artist - Track Name (Remix) [Label]

the key feature would be awesome, but why not have an update to make RECORDING easier for the pioneer DJ?

@Andrew > Because there are plenty of programs that can do this already...?  Honestly, it's not that hard to fire up Audacity in the background and have the set recorded over USB.  Rekordbox can't handle audio through the ethernet connection.

Please take of the AIFF- Import problem from Beaport AIFF files to Recordbox. The tag and artwork are not imported from Beatport AIFF files into Recordbox version 1.5.1. Of course there is a workaround via iTunes, but I hope you'll be able to fix this.

What is the workaround?  I have to make mp3's in order for them to show up in Rekordbox.

also, Audacity doesn't work with OSX Lion. Just an FYI in case anyone is thinking about upgrading.

Full "import from USB stick" support for easier migration please !!!
After all we are all mobile DJs with 5 computers and 10 locations, it is impossible to have the collection on all computers.
Because Rekordbox practically can´t be used on more than one PC, this is a basic functionality bug. (i know there is some sort of workaround but it is ver complicated, requires internet access, and it never worked for me)
Give power to the USB, MAKE BACKWARDS SYNCH POSSIBLE!

"Master BPM" on / off
Checking on would mean that the BPM is automatically matched to a master BPM.
CD player A is master, set to 125.00 BPM.
All tracks loaded into the players ABCD automatically appear set to 125.00 BPM.
(This might be more a CDJ update request than Rekordbox)

xyz234, how about you just learn to beatmix properly instead of trying to find the easy way out.

@xyz234 > A "reverse sync" wouldn't be something Pioneer will support for two reasons - the first is the technical hurdle of getting the music into the a new host database, the second is to prevent piracy.

@Pulse
technical hurdle: as you say, it´s a hurdle, not impossible.
piracy: I don´t understand this point. MP3s on the USB are not encrypted, it is no problem to grab them if you really want. Or make a 1:1 copy. If one thinks a friend´s collection makes him a better DJ, they can also just copy his harddrive. I don´t think anyone who works with Rekordbox would see this feature as a great opportunity to copy music from someone else. I would never let anyone grab my stick - it´s my personal collection and noone´s business

@xyz234 > With software almost anything is possible, but whether or not it's something they would or would consider implementing is another question.  The piracy angle is the same as Apple; you can't simply up and copy the contents into someone else's iTunes library -- but if you know how, you can get the contents off the device.

Implementing reverse synch into Rekordbox is perfectly legal.
Apple made a choice to make file handling hard, only because otherwise most big labels wouldn´t have given them their catalogue when they started.

From a philosophical standpoint I find it honorable that you want to fight piracy.
But Rekordbox is not the time and place to do that.

I use Rekordbox extensively and I am really waiting for some necessary update's.

I use version 1.5.1 (osx) and there are some functions not properly working or highly anticipated in my humble opinion.

- For instance the iTunes bridge. There is a refresh button within Rekordbox, but Rekordbox doesn't refresh it's library when the iTunes library (the .xml file) is changed. This way i have to go to iTunes > save the the library > startup Rekordbox > and replace all the playlists from the iTunes bridge to Rekordbox just to update Rekordbox when i add new numbers to ITunes (my primary database)

- Rekordbox is still very unstable. I still have a few crashes each month. Sometimes Rekordbox also refuses to startup the link function,  when i restart Rekordbox everything works fine.

- The import of album illustration isn't working properly; not all illustrations are imported from iTunes, even when they are present in iTunes

There are a few suggestions:

- Change the (program) background colors! Or at least let the user have that option.

- Please make use of the album illustration in the Rekordbox software. The only place where i can see and use the album illustration is on my CDJ.

I would really want this function be added in Rekordbox. It would be nice to see and organize your music files not by list (as it is now) but also (as a option) by album art, like iTunes has for years.

- Add a option to organize the lists with multiple rules > it would be great to create or use playlists where you have it (example) ordered by bpm and key and userrating so that you can find tracks that have the same key and bpm.

Just thought of something!

It would also be nice to have a export function of specific playlist (with right mouse click for instance). I would really love to export my tag list to iTunes for instance. (yes i'm very iTunes orientated i know...)

@Adriaan > If you are having problems with crashing, please start a new thread with information from the Rekordbox Read Me and I'll be happy to assist.

As for the question regarding the album artwork, it is already displayed when a track is loaded to the player (within the software), to the right of the time and overview waveform.

@Pulse

Thank you for the tip. When it crashes i will examen and post the read me in a new thread.

As for the album artwork i see it is on the right but it doesn't have any function besides seeing it off course.

What i would like is to have something like a scroll function within the album artwork, like coverflow in iTunes for instance. But a scroll function like on the cdj 2000 tag list would be nice to. I miss the speed of album artwork  loading in the tag list though. Because the pictures show late it doesn't really work like a case of vinyl, which potential it has.

A few more things to fix:

- Fix the bug that occurs when reloading MP3 Tags in larger numbers which results in Rekordbox crashing.

- Fix the crashing when dragging and dropping 2000+ tracks into Rekordbox

Other suggestions:

- Export playlist to other format

- Database backups and restore (internal Rekordbox db)

- Internal keydetection

Also RB needs to be more stable and needs to be able to make use of the new generation Intel I3,I5,I7 processors on 64 bit systems,

Would be great if we replace a file with a better bitrate that when I reload tag info, RB actually shows the new nitrate, for example....

1. found a couple of files at 128k

2. matched them in iTunes and now they are 256k

3. overwrite the 128 file with the new 256 file yet RB still has the old tag into showing it is still 128 even though I know its the 256k file

just an FYI to above, Serato has no issue with the change, once I load the track or analyze it, the nitrate immediately changes to 256 knowing its the new track

Yes, rewrite it from scratch .... It is very slow locks are missing some useful features (SYNC) isalmost unusable .... despite high-performance machine .... It's a shame ....$

How about this: when i create a new folder or (nad) playlist, in rekordbox i see them in order i like, but in the cdj's i see first folders and then playlist's. I like them in same order as in rekordbox.. Don't know where to suggest this, in rekordbox or in cdj's update..

@Gianluca > I'm unsure why you would want a "SYNC" feature in Rekordbox? It is a Music Management software and a DJ application. The SYNC feature would be useless because there would be nothing for Rekordbox to SYNC the current track to, let alone Rekordbox doesn't change the tempo of tracks.

@tasos > I'm not exactly sure if this is what you mean, but HERE is a video Pulse made about how to change the order on the CDJ when using a USB device. You can also change the list on the CDJ when connected via LINK by going to "Preferences", the "Export" tab at the top, and then add and rearrange which categories you want to be displayed on the CDJ and the order.

I hope that's what you're looking for. :)
