I would like to duplicate my original DVDs and take the copies to the club instead.

What media should I use? DVD+R or DVD-R

Does doing the DVJ-X1 System update make a difference?

Thanks.

I use +R myself. If your burning for the DVJ, then you need to use -R or -RW only. Since I burn all my Music to DVD for archive, I just go with +R........

I don't see anything in the update that states the +R is added as a supported format. MP3s and Digital out w/ DVDs is added, but I would stay with -R for the DVJ-X1 since it is a supported format along with DVD-RW...

Also keep in mind that many DVD's (commercial, Promo Only etc) are DVD-9 and unless you have a dual layer burner with dual-layer discs, you can't write DVD-9's (they're too big for standard 4.7gb discs).

1:1 duplication would only be possible with DL DVD blanks (and even then I think it might not fit completely), but you can use programs to shrink things down at the expense of quality. Programs like DVD Shrink, among many.

1:1 is possible with dual layer. i use verbatim DL discs and they work fine in the
DVJ. I never tried +r after the update but before the update they took forever to load if at all. Good Luck!

This has to be my favorite subject

First off I only use Verbatim Discs with a Plextor Burner PX-716AL and it has not let me down yet!!!and the prices are great 500 for under $250.(prices are not allowed to be talked about on the forum)

If you can burn onto a Dual Layer Disc do it, if you decide to compress using programs like DVD Shrink and DVD2One etc. the quality does go down but it is not horrible (it won't look like VHS).

Also I have had my DVJ's for nearly 2 years and I have used DVD+R's since day one and after the upgrade with NO Problems. Just recently I found out they were not suppose to be compatible but mine are, maybe I'm just special

Prices of DJ gear aren't allowed to be posted but non-DJ gear is fine.

I'm going to use external USB 2.0 Dual Layer DVD burner with my laptop. Does anyone have any disc burn/read issues when using USB burners? Any tips?

Oh, I'm using PC, Windows XP SP2.

Thanks for the tip on the Verbatim.

I use a firewire burner, and it's actually a slower interface than USB 2.0, and it burns fine. USB will also be fine (I use many a USB HD and if those can deliver the data good an quick, it'll be fine on a burner).

Oh, and MAKE SURE you get Plextor. I had a Lite-On DVD burner before and the thing never burnt anything but CD's right. Now I have a Plextor and I've never looked back. They may be a bit more expensive, but hey, just like Pio, you're paying for quality.

I just came back from Office Max. I found Dual-Layer Verbatim DVD-R for $34.99 for a spindle of 10. Is this a good price? or do any of you know somewhere online that's cheaper.

...but those maximums are all theoretical anyhow. USB vs. FW doesn't really stack up to a decent fight. I use FW for lower latency, USB where I don't have FW.

I agree. I much prefer FW to USB. But sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do...

A techie friend of mine just mentioned that USB definitely has a faster throughput than FW. However, USB has more of a likelihood of having bad burns. This is because any power interruption will cause a slight hiccup in the USB connection which in turn causes any current process to hiccup as well = bad burn. FW doesn't have this issue because they are two different technologies. So, to be safe, if you're using a USB to burn discs, make sure your workstation has some type of battery backup/line conditioner.

Well USB may have faster throughput, but it also has higher overhead on the CPU. FW doesn't, everything is controlled by the FW controller. So depending on what your CPU is doing, sometimes FW might be faster. And, when burning, you're not even coming close to the speeds that FW or USB2.0 can support.

Also, if you have FW800 (and a device that supports it) then you've got almost twice as fast as USB2.0. But those are still rare and expensive.

My favourite word still comes to play here: "theoretical".

Theoretically, USB2 maxes out at 440MB/s, FW is 400MB/s. Too bad neither of them have come near to 400MB/s.

My new favorite word is Why... Like why is a Lap top with FW $300 more than a LT w/ USB2? I know and realize the answer, but after upgrading to USB2 in my old HP last week, ( yes Pulse, I did the upgrade and replced my CDrom drive to a new DVD-RW!!!!! I'm getting geeky.. ) for $35 I can't justify going FW just yet......

See now Pulse is confusing his musical notes with his compy standards. USB 2.0 isn't 440mb/s, it's 480... lol

Also, Jay, check to see if the compy you're looking at has an IEEE 1394 port (sometimes called an iLink port). THAT'S FW - it's just the 4-pin standard. Just about every laptop sold these days has one (I should think), the only difference is that it can't run powered devices and so anything you plug into it must have it's own power.

That's the thing I was told as well. Having it is own FW port for the money seems a bit much, BUT that is based on the fact that I don't use FW because I don't have FW You know, you don't miss what you don't use I guess....

I did realize the difference between USB and USB2 when I backed up my PC to an external HD and it took 41 hours via USB...
