Q: Will it play commercial dvds or Hollywood DVD movies? A: Basically it will play as long as it is recorded or authored based on a DVD video format, but there are some authoring limitations to play. Q: What is the Tempo Control Range when playing CDs A: Ranges of +/- 6%, +/-10%, +/-16% and +/-100% Q: What is the Tempo Control Range when playing DVDs A: Ranges of +/- 6%, +/-10%, +/-16% and +70% /-100% Q: What is the finest pitch increment on the DVJ A: 0.02% (at +/- 6%) a 100mm linear high precision slider MEDIA and FORMATS: Q: Will the DVJ player PLAY DVD-R or DVD-RW? There is no region free model. All players are able to play DVDs marked "All Regions" or "Region Free". Q: Where can I get DVD music videos? A: NO, a surrounding region of the current play point, cuepoint and hotcues is buffered in order to have delay free scratching. Q: How many cue points and loop points can you store within the unit? Do you need an SD card? A: The DVJ-X1 doesn't store any memory points without an SD card. With a card, you can store CUE points, LOOP points, HOT CUE/LOOP points (3 point per disc), and WAVE DISPLAY data. For example, With a 32MB SD card, DVJ-X1 can store 450 DVD discs with 1 CUE or LOOP point per disc, or 75 DVD discs with 20 CUE or LOOP points per disc or 17 DVD discs with 100 CUE or LOOP points per disc. Q: Can change the hotcues during playback? A: YES Q: Is the loop seamless? A: YES, and it can be adjusted with the Loop-Out Adjust button. Q: Is there an "IN" adjust like on the 1000s? A: NO Q: Is there an "OUT" adjust like on the 1000s? A: YES Q: Are the hotcues instant? A: YES Q: Can I store a Loop to a Hot Cue? A: YES Q: Can you store and create new hotcues on the fly A: YES, like the CDJ-1000's Q: Can you load hotcues from memory on the fly A: Hot cue LED will be flashing yellow if the Hot cue point is memorized into the memory card when you insert card and disc. You then must press the Hot cue button to be ready to go. Q: When I play DVDs the gain level light is much lower than CDs. Can that be changed on the DVJ? A: Yes it is true that some DVD's audio level are lower than CD. Additionally, the audio level of some DVDs are the same as CD. The issue is not only DVD vs CD, but also between all media. This is a mastering issue of the DVD manufacture. The DVDs are just burned and mastered at that lower level and that cannot be changed on the DVJ. The only thing you can do is the same thing you would do when an audio CD has less volume than another CD: you can raise the Trip and EQ gains of your mixer so that you get the level to your desired point. Q: FAQ: Why are DVD audio levels less than CD? A: ALL DVD's sound lower than a CD, not just DJ Promo Only DVDs. I will give a brief explanation although it is probably more than you want to know: There is only a slight difference in audio level (6 dB) between a Promo Only DVD and any CD. There is a Hugh difference (17 dB at the minimum) between a store bought DVD and than any CD. The video format to DJ is new and different. Since in the past a 3/4 inch or VHS deck could not play another format (couldnt a cassette tape in your VCR), no one noticed differences between one format or another, but the difference has always been there. The peak level of an audio signal is highest level it ever gets, whether it reaches it just once or many times. The average volume level is the level a listener usually perceives the audio. . The standard peak audio level for mastering a CD is 0 dB. The average volume level varies according to the producer and the type of music, but is usually it's from around -6 to -12 DB. Promo Only masters their CD's according to that standards also. Audio level in Video is measured in VU which is not the same as dB. The standard peak audio level for Video is 0 VU which equates to -17 dB. A music Video DVD, the average volume level is often -24 dB or under. Any DVD for sale to the general public will follow these standards. Promo Only masters beyond these standards. They master their DVDs with a peak at a -7 dB, (more than 10 dB above the standard). This is the top limit of the DVD format. Since is doesnt not allow for headroom, anything higher would result in a distorted audio. When comparing a CD to a DVD in the same player, the audio level of the DVD will always sound lower than a CD. But since a DVD uses 24 bit encoding for audio where CD only uses 16 bit, the noise floor is lower and the dynamic range is larger on the DVD. As long as everything is connected correctly (adding video often adds unanticipated ground loops) the result is a better audio output even if its lower. So in other words... just turn up the volume on the mixer to match the level of the CDs, it will sound the same or better. good info but is it 100% up to date? ie some posts mention mp3 playback and dvd format compatibility.
would be nice to see what the final production unit features will be. I am hoping for dvd+r compatibility so i dont have to buy a new burner. cheap as anyway really but when the dvj x1 is $$$ already, another pile of $$ to get the rest of your system up to scratch hurts a bit. anyway i am rambling was just hoping to maybe see a new and updated FAQ with final production unit features |
