Hi I was wondering if someone can help me out. I'm going to upgrade my mac computer to do quicker video editing. I'm thinking about buying a Quad 2.5GHz Power Mac G5 computer. I'm going to be running Final Cut 5 HD and Protools 7. Does anyone know if those programs have conflicts with this computer? I currently use a G4 tower with Protool LE 6.4. All is running good, what I want to do is run dual 23inch monitors and want to upgrade system to be faster. In the past some versions of protools don't work with certain mac OS. I'm going to call Digi Design and and ask them a few question also. I wanted to ask here because most of you guys are doing the same thing and are very helpful.
Thanks

Apple has released a version that will support the new intel chip and it's architecture....for Final Cut Pro and the whole Final Cut Studio (you will love motion for creating content). As far as ProTools....they always lack behind. There is no current support, but they say it will come. Maybe it get's released at NAB. On my ProTools Macs I wait a few month to even do a system software update. If you upgrade your system from say 10.3.8 to 10.4 you might find your ProTool may not function properly. Sometimes
it will work fine but they won't "support it" on their website (or offer you support if you've upgraded).
Check the Digidesign site support - compatibility section for the latestest and greatest.

Don't let this hold you back though. By early summer you'll find that they'll have released the software.

In the meantime you can use Soundtrack Pro included in your Final Cut Studio package to do sound editing / processing until the ProTools upgrade becomes available!!!!!!

You'll love your new system.
Oh another cool thing with Motion (and your kick as computer speed and video card)
is that you'll be able to do realtime video processing with a midi controller....
No Rendering....realtime output.

Then use compressor to compress it all and DVD studio to burn your DVDs

im rocking the same setup now FC on the intel mac (2.16 with 2g of ram) yea the digidesign says its gonna come out in May for the intel...of course we dont know when in May. In the meantime yea you could use soundtracks, Im hoping to be able to track audio in protools and video in FC, because tracking audio in final cut sounds like crap, anyone using this set up get at me

What do you mean by "Tracking"?

If your doing any video re-editing, remixing etc. You'll want to stay in FCP.
Both your Audio and Video. So nothing goes out of sync. As you edit the video
the audio will edit as well.

Then when your ready to do fine audio tweaking. You can do an OMF export
from FCP into Protools and fix your edits, master your audio, etc. then re-export
back into FCP and go from there.

For all of this basic audio editing you don't really need ProTools.

NEWS FLASH:

It also appears now that in the new ProTools 7.2 software that you will be able to edit video
along with editing your audio. Which would be killer cause I would think most of your remixes
would be based on the audio, now the video just follows the edits you make.

This might only be available on their TDM systems (not LE) it's not very clear. Just a early announcement
from Digi.

Hi everyone,
Thanks for the help. I called Digi design and they told me 7.2 is still not available but will only work with TDM system not LE. They told me it won't be as powerful as avid - FCP. You won't be able to have the best of both worlds for audio & video. I would need to step up to TDM for audio and avid for video editing.
Going back to the Quad system I'm thinking about buying. I debating on waiting for the new quad qth intel chip. I hear that all new mac pro computers with intel chip's are 5 times faster then the old chip. I don't want to buy a system then the next week a new one is out. 5 times faster that souds great imagine a quad 5 times faster. That would be very impressive!!!! Also I would be able o use bootcamp to run PC software if needed. The only thing is that I don't know when exactly it's going to be out. looks like tey're upgrading all systems every 2 to 3 months. Does anyone know or heard anything about when it's going to be out.
Thanks

You just need to figure out when the next Mac Expo, developer conference, NAB, NAMM, AES show etc happens (world wide) and that's usually when you can expect a new release from Apple. Just had a look at their site and looks like 1st week in August is the world wide Developer show....that's probably when you can expect new machines from them.
