I am thinking about adding an external effector to my setup. I am upgrading my mixer to a DJM800 (I know - but I still want MORE FX!!!). I am considering a Korg KP3 Kaoss pad. The thing that concerns me is that it samples in 16 bit which is lower than the DJM800s 24bit. Is this a bad idea??? Is there maybe something else I should look at if I want crazy effects capability but a better bit rate (maybe something Pioneer makes)? I know about the EFX1000 and it is great (props to Pioneer). But, I liked the touch screen capability on the Kaoss pad. I have seen video of bigtime DJs using a touch sensitive pad too. Is that what they are using or is it something different? Thanks in advance and have fun mixing!

Just ask yourself, with what do you spin?

Vinyl? Audio CD's? MP3 CD's?

Considering an Audio CD is 16bit, it'll be good enough Wink
Only if you have all your sources in 24bit it will make a difference, but otherwise I would just get the KP3 Smiler

Go and use it first. Decide if it's what you want.

Are Mp3 files in 16 bit as well??? I spin mostly from mp3s that I buy online and some cds. I guess I am ok on CD but what about the Mp3s?

Here's a little explanation to make it more clear:

CD Audio has a sample rate of 44100 Hz & a bit depth of 16 bits.

With digital audio it works a little different:

quote:
Technically speaking, bit depth is only meaningful when applied to pure PCM devices. Non-PCM formats, such as DSD or lossy compression systems like MP3, have bit depths that are not defined in the same sense as PCM. This is particularly true for lossy audio compression,

Source: Wiki Wink

So you really shouldn't look at the bit depth because it's not very usefull for your needs at this moment, just be sure you have the highest quality possible.
For some releases I try to download WAV or FLAC. These formats are lossless and contain no compression what so ever.

But If you don't want to go that far, a bitrate of 320 CBR is nice enough. But in your case I'd just stay with the Audio CD's, MP3's work fine also but with stuff like Master Tempo it doesn't sound as good in my opinion.

The EFX is 10000 times nicer to use than the KP3 imo for DJ'ing.
It is a very well known fact the sound quality sucks on it and that it doesnt have a true by-pass (I know some clubs in Japan who build boxes to trully by-pass it but I digress
Any way my point is you will be using it through a send&return on your DJM and unless you are playing with a f*ucking FX on all night long with the mix at max the sound quality issue doesnt matter one bit, this whould only matter if your master output goes through the EFX all night long like on a mixer with no FX loop or send and return or old mixer like a 1620 which doesn't have a switchable FX loop

DJM 800 should be all you need bro. But if you need more look to the EFX 1000. I've been on Korg for the past 3 years and its very hard to exactly duplicate your FX on it. Club installed a EFX 1000 Dream come true SH!@ is on now 100%

I agree with Switchit, the DJM800 should do the job & if you want more get an EFX500 or better the EFX1000. I had a Mini Kaoss Pad & sold it because I thought it was useless!
