Hey not really sure where to post this topic but since I'm new to this I thought I'd post here.
I recently did a 5 minute Dance Routine Mix for a friend, she gave me all the songs and told me how she wanted it done and I just mixed it. Well, apparently people liked it and are asking her how much I charge to do it. Here's my question, How much does one charge for something like this? Thanks spy |

Back when I was in high school (5 years ago), I did cheerleading mixes for the team. After doing the first couple for free, I was told they would pay me for the work. I ended up getting between $50-100 per minute of the mix (depending on difficulty of the mix and adding in sound effects and all) While I dont know if there is an average or anything, I do know that top sports teams will pay $1000+ for a whole 3 minute song for their cheer/dance teams to use (a few of the Baltimore Ravens Cheerleaders have worked with my DJ company as dancers and have provided insight into this) I stopped doing the mixes as it required more production work than anything else (something I find fun but VERY time consuming, since I am a mobile/bar/club DJ and dont ahve much time to sit at home and produce tracks) I did, however, do a dance mix last year and was paid $300 for a 3 minute song (was used for a college dance team). So I'd say start small but once u get a following, up the price.. it's all about the amount of time and work you are putting into the mix.

Cool, thanks for the reply!
Yeah I was thinking of starting at $50 maybe then moving on up. Like I said she provided me with all the songs I just did the mixing/production. I made it clear that I'm an Electronic music DJ/listener so I don't have any hip-hop/rap/top40 stuff. If they want me to seek out and buy the tracks myself I should charge more right? |

I mean, yeah why wouldn't you? I would charge enough to at least cover your expenses if you are buying songs/music you don't have. But if they are giving them to you, that is different. Again, it's all relative to the work you put in (time, energy) and even the relationship with the client (friend of yours, aquaintance...are you doing a one off mix or will this be a regularly occuring thing?) If someone tells me they'll use me for x number of jobs, I'll definitely give them a discount since I know I have their business for mutiple jobs..the discount, while it may not be a lot, shows the client I am working with them.. But as I said, it's all relative.. I DJ because I have fun doing it and it's a release from my 9-5 crappy job. So the money is just a bonus t me (though don't get me wrong, I do expect people to pay what I think my services are worth and if they don't want to, then I won't do the job..haha) Some guys are in this strictly for the money...so as i said, it's all relative.
