Interesting... I usually beatmatch on the top-end (snares and hats), initially at least, because it's tighter than the bottom end. If you have a boomy kick its timing can be quite uncertain. It's also generally easier to tell, when using mix cue, which side the top ends belong to than it is the kicks.

Don't ignore the kicks entirely of course, you need to check that they sit ok together before you do the mixthru, but in at least 95% of cases if you've got the hats and snares sitting pretty, the kicks follow suit.

do you have cdj's?

if so, take whatever tracks you like and make a short loop and just mix the hell out of them. The song will never end so you can make as many mistakes as you want, the BPM's SHOULD stay the same if you looped them correctly.
That,s how I started back in 1995, I bought 2 records that had loops on them and just mixed for hours.
it works.

i think blackwood means BPM!

But who told you to look out for kicks not snares?? you'd want to find this man and give him a good slap across the face coz he's pulling your ass cheeks apart. Like Quaestor says go with the top ends and make life easier on yourself!!

To add my own two cents: get a copy of one your tracks and mix in and out. it might seem stupid but depending on how advanced you are it will give you a feel on how much you need to adjust tempo and bend to get them in sync.
