I'm in the habit of doing the following, and I know alot of other djays do it this way,
Output is the last thing you switch on once you've set up and the first thing you switch off when you've finished and are packing up, SETUP: Step 1: Turn on source of beats [CDJ's] Step 2: Turn on Mixer Step 3: Turn on your output, [Amplifier, Self powered speakers] PACKUP Follow steps in reverse, and turn the volume knobs on your amps and speakers and mixers so volume is "killed" then switch off otherwise you r speakers make that "pop" sound when you switch them off, Likewise when you setup remember your mixer isn't an amplifier, if you want your setup louder crank the speakers or amp gains up not the mixers, GAIN is for signal strength not volume! You should EQ so output out the mixer is 0db always, and always EQ at a lower volume in an empty room [say level 5 or 6 on your channel slider], then when the punters arrive you can always crank it up all the way to level 10, and if you still need more volume then crank the speakers or amp up, |

I would only say turn all the mic gains down when powering on the mixer, and turn the amps on last.
The small pop from a cdj turning on is not going to harm the mixer. When packing up, I don't mind a pop when turning off. It's not harmful, and I like to leave my levels at a preset setting, so it's plug and play at the next show. What the owners manuals will tell you with all your signal processing is not to adjust switch settings while speakers are powered as this can actually send a harmful signal down the path. (for example - crossover switches) The only other harmful thing I can think of is the connection /disconnection of signal cables after speakers are powered. Bad Bad. Mehow says EQ, and yet I think he's talking about the channel volume slider. But either way he is right about 0db. Keep it Green! |

OK thanks to both of you. It seems like the main idea is not to spike power through the equipment or speakers. Based on what you both said I now do it like this (no speakers yet so I don't have to worry about that):
When powering down: Flip kill switches for channels 1 and 2. Turn channel gains down to -00. Return all EQ levels to middle. Move channel faders to 0. Turn headphone and master gains down to -00. Turn off all headpone channel buttons (1,2,master). Power off DJM. Return CDJs to root menu (I use MP3s) and power off CDJS. When powering up: Power on CDJs and wait for menus to load, power on DJM, release kill on all channels, bring channel gains up, turn up master and headphone gains to desired starting level. Thanks again for the advice. Have fun mixing! |
