I am new to this forum and must say it is very helpful and I am glad I found it. Started dj'ing about a year ago. I have pioneer cdj1000's. Lately I have been reading a lot about guys beginning to used ableton live with no hardware just the computer to do mixes. Do yo guys think the cdjs where a waste of money and that its all going to be the ableton type mixing.

Nah, I've used Ableton, it's a lot of hard work to get all your tracks mapped properly within the software.

Don't get me wrong, it's a great application and if you're into production stuff, it can totally change your performance but I don't see it as being a replacement for a pair of decks.

The hands on approach will always be around. the media will change, but you need that tactile medium that allows for a performance.

The minute someone makes a computer that can be trusted not to crash in the middle of gig, there may need to be some thought put into this question. Until then, CDJ's are all you need to know.

Also, DJJay's point about the tactile experience is a very good one. I met a guy recently who had a bit of kit (from another manufacturer) that was an all-in-one hard drive and mixer. It was an amazing bit of kit that sounded great, stored thousands of tunes and was small enough to fit in a bag that you could sling over your shoulder. But tune selection was done via a scrolling screen, no bigger than a few postage stamps. Urgh! No thanks. I can see how that destroy all creativity and spontaneity.

Have you heard that the turn table is dead?

This has been said every day after the 1st CD player came out,and you still see them at most clubs.
