Hey guys I have a major favor to ask. My employer has asked me to DJ our annual employee appreciation event in May. I work in telecommunications for a local hospital with over 3000 employees. The hospital makes a big to do about all employee events and there will be well over 3000 in attendance. They normally hire a band to play music at these events, but they want to do something different this year. They are going with a beach theme this year and have requested beach party music. Other than the Beach Boys, I dont know what else to play. The event committee gave me some ideas like Jimmy Buffet and Heuy Newton, but other than that I am at a loss. Seeing that 80% of the hospital population is female, I want to do a good job because this could potentially put me out there in the middle of the wedding season. Ive never done anything this big before and would appreciate any suggestions as far as music playlists, games, dos and dontswhatever! Since we are open 24 hours a day I will be playing at three different times over a two day period so that all employees are able to attend. Thanks in advance guys. Danjah

Go to an online store..and buy the compilation cd's. Get about 10 good ones throughout the last 30 years and you'll be set for life.

Whenever you buy compilations, whether they're "greatest hits" albums or genre compilations, be SURE that they're by the ORIGINAL ARTISTS, and in some cases, Original Recordings.
Nothing worse than popping in that first "Hits of the 70's" CD to hear some joe schmoe cover band playing American Pie... Most online compilations by Time Life, RazorTie, etc., are original or re-mastered originals, so they're pretty safe. But you'll still get the occasional "short version" of a longer song, so be careful, too. Also, some of the companies selling compilations (such as one of the aforementioned) have large package deals such as "This 8 CD set is all you need", but buying the individual packages that make up the larger package is oft-times cheaper... Just my $.02 |

Yup, I just got this "Swing" Cd that had "Zoot Soot Riot" by some no name. It totally brought the vibe of the song down...good thing I was reviewing it before a gig!!!

Any "feel good" songs will work, doesn't have to be "beach theme songs" in my opinion. Play some funk (brick house), 50,60 maybe some disco? It all depends on your crowd. Just read the crowd.

Man, I have to admit that you guys are top shelf! Once again you guys have exceeded my expectations. I use this site as a source of information and knowledge and you guys always come through as if I have DJ buddies across town or something. I have taken all the suggestions down and I can't say thank you enough. You guys have given me some insight to some songs I wouldn't have thought of and I really appreciate it. Although the event isn't until mid-May I would appreciate any other suggestions you guys can think of before then. I have looked at some compilations and know all about those "All-Star Singers" CD's. I bought one thinking I was getting a good deal on all the latest tracks...low and behold it was some bull$hit!
The hospital I work for is directly across the street from former president Bill Clinton's church home. The church just openend a new facility futher out west and the hospital I work for bought the old church. They have this HUGE hall that I am assuming they used for church functions (banguets and what nots). It has been renamed and remodeled and I got a chance to walk through it today and saw the stage where a podium is set up where I will be in May. Finally, I'll get to make good use of my light show as the ceiling in the place is a few stories high. The former employee appreciation ice cream social used to be held a couple blocks from the main campus in the lower doctor's parking lot, but I have the honors of breaking in the newly remodeled hall for the first indoor employee appreciation event where ice cream sundaes are served as well as the anticipated gift we receive. Along with you guy's suggestions and some thoughts I have brewing, I am hoping all will be well. Thanks again you guys and do keep the suggestions coming. - Danjah |

Hey guys as the date fast approaches, I am still gathering music for this event. I have got ahold of every track you guys have listed and surely appreciate the info. We have a pretty good percentage of hispanic workers at my job. I was wondering if you guys know of any good hispanic music that would go with this event. I thought about Selena's Bidi Bidi Bum Bum, buth thought that it may be a bit corny. Any suggestions would be most helpful. Thanks again. - Danjah

Selena's song? Great for Tucson, at any party...but Arkansas?? Don't know the culture much...but it's a fun song, play it! What's the worst that can happen? You rinse the dance floor and start back up again.
I've got a few friends in AR and they listen to country...make sure you put that in there too. Country is a big overlooked genre. Folks like Clint Black, Tim McGraw, George Strait and Toby Keith aren't rich for nothin'. They've got the same record deals as everyone else...it just shows that probably more people than you know listen to country. YeeeeFreakin'Haaaaaaa! |

Quote: The hispanic population has hit Arkansas in blind-siding fashion. Texas is right below us and they have always understandably had a large hispanic population. In the past 10 years we have developed into a scaled down version of Texas. My next door neigbors are hispanic by way of California. The father owns a construction company. Very decent people and great neighbors as well. With that being said, as strange as it seems, Arkansas, especially Little Rock has a very large hispanic population. I thought "Heaven" by the Los Lonely Boys would be another cool track to play along with the Selena song. A lot of the songs others mentioned were country songs that I had never heard of. I have been rocking them in the car to get a feel for them on the way to work each day. Many were country songs that I have no doubt will go over very well at the event. I can't accept credit for them, but it will show some great range and who knows what I may be able to fish out of this. It will be a diverse crowd and I will need everything from A to Z. Doctors, nurses, therapists, social workers, housekeepers, skilled workers, cooks, administrative people, and the list goes on and on. All walks of life, race, gender, and culture will be represented. I'll play three different 2 hour sets. Sunday May 15 from 6p-8p, Monday May 16 from 2p-4p (the biggest of them all), and Monday May 16 10p-12a. I really appreciate you guys coming through. With the suggestions I have more than enough music to help diversify the gig, but I am still open to suggestions. Thanks again. - Danjah |
