Hey,

I'm a beginner DJ starting off with either 2 x CDJ 1000 MK and a DJM 800 mix board or 2 x CDJ 200's and a DJM 400 mixing board (it all depends if my father's friend is going to sell his back up set to me or not) ANYWAYS, I was wondering what kind of sound system set up I need? I only need something minimal to suffice seeing as I'm going to be a bedroom DJ for the time being. Not looking for any specific brands but what should I be searching for? Looking for the cheapest set up possible.

Thanks

if you've got your cdjs and mixer sorted all you'll need are some headphones for cueing and a set of powered (or active, same thing) monitor speakers, there are plenty of reasonable budget ones around. active monitors have the amplifier built in so you save the cash on an extra unit.

I have no idea if this is against the rules of the forums but is this something ideal:

<EDIT> You might not be advertising but you linked to a STORE which is a no-no. </EDIT>

IN NO WAY am I trying to advertise. Just trying to get a cheap pair of bedroom dj sound set up going.

Yeah, I kind of saw that happening so here are the product details instead of a link:

Product Description
Behringer MS16 Active Personal Monitor Speaker System

The BEHRINGER MS16 is a compact 2-way stereo speaker system for home studio or multimedia applications and instrument or vocal monitoring.

Two high-power amplifiers drive the 4-inch woofers and the high-resolution tweeters. The front-mounted volume control and individual bass and treble controls make accurate sound adjustments a breeze.

Two stereo line inputs (RCA and eighth-inch TRS) allow simultaneous use of two stereo sources, so you can play back CDs, MDs or MP3s and use an electric guitar/keyboard at the same time. In addition, the quarter-inch TRS microphone input lets you mix vocals with a stereo track.

Magnetic shielding and compact size make these speakers perfect for placement near video monitors or computer displays.

Behringer MS16 Features

Compact stereo speaker system ideally suited for home studios, multimedia applications, keyboard and vocal monitoring, etc.
Powerful 4” woofer and high-resolution tweeter powered by two 8-watt amplifiers
Dedicated volume, bass and treble controls for more flexibility
Stereo RCA inputs for sound cards, keyboards etc. which can be used simultaneously with second stereo source (e.g. CD/MD player) through 1/8” TRS stereo input
Separately adjustable 1/4" TRS microphone input mixable with stereo inputs for playback and vocal monitoring applications

You have to listen to the speakers because they're not all the same. Even if your budget can only afford cheap, listen to them first. You'd be surprised at the sound difference between manufacturers and between models from the same manufacturer.

M-Audio Bx8's Big Grin love these...I just love the sound they give out. Most people prefer the KRK's which are also excellent, but something about the Bx8's just "pulls" me like a chick at a bar Big Grin

i don't know about their speakers but behringer still makes the best white zinfandel, tastes better than most if not all, is rediculously cheaper, get's rated tops in most taste tests, and yet the (pay for their status) elitists still cringe at it's mention.

no seriously, pulse and just are 100% right.

just go in and listen, you get to hear them in a comparitive setting, and you will definately hear some you don't like, and some you do.

I still use the family hi-fi amp (old silver Pioneer don't have the model number from the ) and matching Pioneer speakers. For practcing this is okay and I don't have to worry about my neighbours). The bass is loud enough (my mixtapes sounds okay).

I have been using this setup for more than 10 years.

If the budget is tight ... hook it up to your equipment to yourmini hifi or family stereo!

Stick with headphones if you are just learning. I have a pair of <SNIP> phones and they work great. Good frequency response and ok noise cancelling - they cost around $80 much less than speakers, an amp, a crossover and all the cabling you would need.

No other names please....

What i mean is you can't!! mix music with just a set of headphones. sure you can hear both tunes in your headphones but come on were talking about mixing music here, you have on fade control and no cross fader control,

and when it comes to speakers YOU MUST HAVE SPEAKERS and some people will say just get small ones but when you play on a good set of speakers by that i meen at least 1 15" and a horn or 2 15" and a horn per speaker and of a good make ie mackie/jbl and so on, you ill never look back, and even if you just want them for home you could have a good speaker turned up half way and it will sound a milloin times better than a s**t one turned up full blast, and more importantly form my experience you mixing will be so much better.

My fade controls work fine when I mix with hphones. Maybe your eardrums are broken. LOL just kidding. But, in all seriousness I think we are all kind of saying the same thing in diferent ways. I guess it all boils down to - you can learn on headphones - but to take it to the next level you need speakers.

You make a good point too that there is a difference mixing through speakers vs. just hphones. Plus playing over a club system is a WAY different ball game, as I found out during my first gig. BUT, you can still have a great time mixing and learning the ropes with hphones. you can learn to work effects, beatmatch, create builds, samples etc. etc. But, to be a masta you gotta get used to the speakers. Rock on bro and have fun mixing!

lol yeah i think my eardrums are well mashed with all that loud music going on!!!!!!!

but out of interest how the hell do you use your cross fader control with headphones, have you got them pluged into your master out in mono? cos your hadphones only play what is cued and fader control has no efect,

Well...on my mixer there is a knob that turns from the que portion to the master portion. If I want to hear only what is going out through the master, then I'll turn that little knob to master.

You'll hear exactly the same thing as whats coming out of the speakers. Think of it as monitors taped to your head.

Hey bro - why don't you chill. If you read my post again you will see that I am just joking around - in regard to the eardrum comment. Plus I give Kplex props for having a valid point and I actually agree with him. Read it again.
