I read this this evening, and was literally shocked. I am not from San Fran area, and haven't heard of such police behavior before. Is it just me or this is really uncalled for.

I read some of that article before (although admittedly not all of it).

I've heard of that happening over here to my cousins friend. He was playing when some from IRMA (Irish Recorded Music Association) flashed the badge... €1,500 fine for illegally acquired music.

4th amendment. Wait for the ACLU to pick up the ball.

I'm not worried about getting busted for drugs cause I don't do them or have them. I think if you just buy your music and don't steal it then the article is mute...

ok now, this is not about any illegal files, this is straight up about San Fran cracking down on illegal parties. the Davy D. blog is a hype piece trying to tie 2 unrelated things together.

and not to mention any names, but i do know some dj's who if some dumb "law enforcement" officer randomly took his laptop and mentioned coarsely that" he may not ever get it back, and then he'll learn his lesson" - well there would be some cop found out behind the dumpster.

this will be short lived, like every other silly thing originating in that city.

So how would you prove that your music was legitimate then, receipts, cat#s? I get loads of promos and bootlegs, are they illegal too?

How can you make law from such a very grey area?

I'd be p****d if my software and music were legal and they took it anyway.

Bring on the first DJ to provide detailed accounts for their musics legitimacy and then screw the government or music association for loss of earnings...I'm just one of those people who has a receipt for everything (especially digital stuff)! (I'm a bit anal like that)!

OK... I'll try and tackle this one point at a time...

1) America has looked, in parts, like a "Police State" for my entire life, so this is far from being a recent phenomenon. There has been no social or cultural movement it the US, that I can think of, that has not come into violent conflict with either the Police or the National Guard ...until just recently, that is. For instance, just three years ago, a man and his wife were arrested, thrown in jail and subsequently lost their jobs - for wearing t-shirts proclaiming that the current President of the that time was, in their opinion, a war criminal. At public rallies by the bloke who's got that job title at the moment, people have been turning-up with loaded semi-automatic rifles ...and nothing's happened. Your Second Amendment rights appear to trump the First in some style - proving, if nothing else, that you are now actually further away from being a Police State than you have been in decades.

2) Despite being a relatively new one, your democracy is the greatest and most fully developed in the world - and, despite parliamentary democracy being more effective than the Presidential system, it is held up as the model for every country that wishes to follow a similar path. Be proud.

3) Your rights are enshrined in law, whereas all some of us have to cling onto is the Magna Carta - an 800 year-old declaration which basically means we can't be sold into slavery and are protected under habeas corpus. Other than that, we've got squat. No right to free speech (no right to silence even!), no right to free assembly, no right to a jury of our peers, no protection against unwarranted Police searches and no right to bear arms (not even the roll-up-your-sleeves variety) ...nothing ...nish ...nada. Oh, and most of the world has significantly less than that.

4) Assertions that America is on a slippery slope towards a Socialist, Communist or Fascistic future can only come from a perspective of never having seen those systems of government in practise, first hand. I've watched that sort of politics at work, up-close and personal, all across Europe and the far East - and The United States is as close to becoming any one of those kind of states as Paris Hilton is to becoming a Nobel laureate, emeritus Professor of Molecular Biology ...and the Pope.

5) Barack Obama is as much of a Maoist as he is a Kenyan Muslim. Although, if he should end up being directly responsible for the deaths of 70 million of his own citizens, I'll gladly concede the point. Let's re-visit this issue in 2012 (or, more likely, 2016) and see. However, if he's still President in 2035 (Mao Zedong ruled for 27 years years), I'll concede the point on principle.

6) Conspiracy Theories. Why is it that conspiracies aren't committed by people who conspiracy theorists agree with? Why is it that conspiracy theorists believe themselves (and others like them) to be the main target in conspiracies? Here's an idea: The greatest conspiracy of ALL TIME is: There is no great conspiracy. And I can prove my non-conspiracy theory far more lucidly than any conspiracy theorists can explain theirs; Put four politicians, who are all cut from the same political cloth, in a room together and ask them just one morally, culturally or philosophically diversive question. Within ten minutes you will see battle lines being drawn-up. Within twenty, you'll start to question whether they are all from the same political party or not. Then ask them to categorically agree with each-other on a political topic they should all easily find common ground with. You'll soon see that the idea of a ruling-class cabal, hell-bent on over-throwing your peaceful life to serve their nefarious ends is a complete fantasy. They are, after all, in charge already - and, if the conspiracy theorists are to be believed, living the high life at our expense. So why complicate the issue?

7) If the banking institutions run everything, why is the biggest, capitalist free-market economy in the world, in hock to the tune of one TRILLION dollars to a communist autocracy with which it is fundamentally philosophically and (in some cases) morally opposed to?

8) If you really think Governments and elected officials are only in place as a façade to trick us into thinking that we have some sort of control over what's going on, then you really should assert your Second Amendment rights with a bit more vigour - because Civil War is your only option. Your opposition, btw, will be the conspiracy theorists favourite paid lackeys, private bodyguards and armed bully-boys of our global governmental oppressors ...the United States Marine Corps! Best of luck with that.

Democracy? Well, Yes ...as much as you've ever had...

<threadjack> You know what cracks me up? That which most people aspire to also happens to be the thing that most people despise and/or blame for all the problems in the world.

Eg: Everyone wants to be rich. Everyone wants to make boatloads of money. The people that DO make boatloads of money, everyone (that same group of "everyone" as previously) hates. Because THOSE PEOPLE have the money. Everyone aspires to something they hate - it's no wonder so few achieve it. It's messed up.

The economy crashes, and everyone blames the capitalists, the guys who own the big corporations, the people they HATE, the people that they want to become, through their own businesses, or what have you. Don't get me wrong, I don't think they're blameless in the current mess, but I think that EVERYONE needs to step up to their part of the crisis and OWN it. If you want my personal opinion, America's #1 problem is not the economy, education, gun control, crime, obesity, poverty, or anything else, it's PERSONAL ACCOUNTABILITY.

If everyone took accountability for their own actions, completely and without fail, 90% (if not more) of the United States' - and indeed the worlds' - problems would simply disappear.

Anyway, more on topic...

It's worthwhile to look up just exactly what the police's rights are (and your own in refusing them to take your property). I'm hardly even an armchair lawyer (let alone a real one) and I recommend checking with a real lawyer before you try sprouting any of it off to anyone but I would bet that confiscation of property has to be done with a warrant.

Secondly, on my more usual tune, keep backups that you don't take with you. That way even if you get the thing confiscated you have a backup you can restore from. For example, I make sure I synchronize my backups before every show - then I have nothing to worry about.

Last, as PeterMichael mentioned, illegal songs are one thing, illegal parties are another entirely. I doubt that many of the DJ's on this board have a reason to worry, because most of the illegal parties have DJ's that use illegal music (that probably don't visit here) and the whole thing DESERVES to get shut down IMHO, because it gives those of us that are professionals a very bad image.

Cheeba, your post was very interesting to say the least! I'm not a conspiracy theorist because I believe any of it is directed to me personally, hell I'm riding out this "F'ed" up economy better than most people I know. My business has actually improved in this mess of an economy and I'm making more money than ever!

We may never see any of my ideas come to fruition within our lifetimes but I do see it happening and it's showing much more than ever under our Zionist Obama. I still believe our government to be a façade, the agenda of the true "powers that be" continues to march on. Everyone hated Bush but now loves Obama? Nothing is different under him yet most people think he's great, they found someone that could continue their plan yet maintain a high approval rating.

This downturn in our economy was a ploy to further their agenda. I have been saying that since before our economy went sour. I saw us all riding this high and foresaw this crash.

They gave us a lot (2003 to 2006) and took away even more (2007 to present) that way we would really suffer and agree to more of our rights being taken away. More people will agree with a one-world socialist agenda after suffering such devastating losses for so long. That's why I believe that 9/11 was a set up too. They use the media to scare us half to death and then we're far more compliant and willing to give away our rights in the name of "fighting terrorism"...

...and don't get me started on the government manufactured "Swine Flu", "West Nile", "Avian Flu", "AIDS" and other engineered diseases designed to scare us, reduce our population, force us to get vaccinations that contain "compliance" drugs that help whittle away at out free will. Eventually these vaccines will be state mandated.
