For ages I have been mixing using the stereo setting (not mono split) in my headphones... but when playing in a club convention is to use one ear headphone and one ear booth monitor.

I can mix flawlessly using headphones... but not using the booth monitor. What is the trick with this? Should I proactise using mono split setting so one track is playing in each ear.

There is no 'trick'. It's just a different aspect of DJ'ing to get used to. The booth monitor solely exists to overcome the natural delay in the sound coming from the house PA.

Have the track you're currently playing coming out of the monitor and into one ear, and the track you're cueing coming out of one side of your headphones in the other ear.

You'll get used to it! Wink

Personally, I can't wait to take headphones off. I think of them as a necessary evil. I cue with them, check and re-check that the tracks lock up, then remove the headphones and do all my mixing via the monitor.

Same here! I can never mix with the headphones..I only use the phones for cueing and finding the tempo's, the actual mixing takes place using the monitor!

In my home setup, I have the booth output coming out of a simple receiver connected to my monitor speakers; while my main output signal goes to my recording.

In addition to eliminating the annoying echo, another benefit about that I'm able to lower my volume without affecting my recording.
