Most mobile jocks aren't using booth monitors because of the size of their rigs. Are you looking for a true "booth monitor" - speakers to help you mix - or speakers for the crowd?

If you need it for yourself for mixing, what kind of house system are you using that you need a booth monitor?

My DJM 3000 has a port for it. I just want to hear clear what the crowd is hearing. I think it will help me with mixing. Don't you think? I have one of the satellite speakers connected to the dbx PX to listen to while practicing at home.

My system is active.

For most DJs, they're not in an environment where the house system is so loud or has such a delay that a booth monitor is necessary, everything is done in the headphones or off-ear to the main system.

Just because you have something doesn't mean you need to use it! Wink

I'll let other mobile DJs post to see what they have to say about monitors.

If all you're doing is weddings and the like, with rare exception I'd say a booth monitor isn't necessary (the exception being gigantic club-style weddings - I've done some).

If you're doing big schools and stuff, then for sure - go with a monitor. I don't usually use one even at clubs (because I do it all in my headphones), but they can help if you're used to it.

I've used different kinds, but a JBL EON 15G2 can be loud enough for damn near any environment you're likely to be in without causing problems.

I use the Yamaha MSR100 for my booth-monitoring purposes. I prefer to have a monitor 100% of the time. Great unit with a 100 watt built-in amp and mixer so I can feed it both the left and right signals off my Pioneer DJM-3000 mixer's booth monitor output for true L + R audio. The 2 band EQ also helps coz I can turn down the low end if I want to play it really really loud!

Very compact and portable plus you can sit it as a floor wedge or on the DJ table-top surface. Also comes with screw slots for those tripod stand mounting bracket attachments if you prefer that stance.

Finally, it's loud enough and flexible enough to use as a last minute or impromptu solution for ceremonies (via the XLR mic input), for c0cktails (attached to an iPod) or for any other "zone" that the client might want music fill. But it's best use comes from DJing at NY lounges that have crappy monitors in the DJ booth!

I have a pair that I carry around in a rolling bag originally designed for the Yamaha StagePas 300 mini PA system but you probably don't need all those accessories if just looking for a DJ monitor!

I use the JBL EON 10G2 the same way Eric does. I have 1 or 2 at every gig. Very light small.

I used to allways use monitors for about my 1st 19-20 years, when I used head phones with one can, But when I started useing two cans I stoped and I think I mix better now.

I've been using Community speakers as monitors, and those babies are freaking loud. Excellent audio quality, and they hardly need any service! They take quite a lot of beating too. I've been using them for about a year and I'm completely happy. Though they are a bit pricey.

I never believed in using it at first but when I started playing in clubs, especially when I really want to "tighten" up my beats, I realized it helps a lot. I am an old-skool, "one ear-cup" dj. What suited me the best is a Mackie 350 at 1-2 arms length away from me. At the same side of my open ear. It's mobil and powerful enough.

I was, for a long time, a mobile DJ
I always wanted monitors in my shows. When i mix sexyback and cottoneyed joe i could only guess from experience what it sounds like.
What i would do (because the owner wouldnt give me the extra speakers) was angle two of the highs at the front of the stage so I could hear them. This looked a little off, but who cares. I also had to compensate by turning it up a bit, but I think the end result was better for everyone. If you want to mix a few tracks instead of one ends and then bang the next track starts, you are going to HAVE to hear it. Just like you said, hear it just as well as the crowd. Try turning the highs a bit.

I went from DJing in Night clubs to mobile disco (wedding etc)and I missed the monitors that I had used to have in the clubs so I just used a standard pair of bedroom speakers MS25i's just to help overcome the delayed echo you get in big venues.. In smaller venues you can do like Richard says and just turn the high end to face you an little..
