Check out the Latin series under Music On CD at Promo Only. Then hit them up for additional direction.

Carlos Vives is always good. Cumbia is not anywhere near the draw of the merengue or salsa, and in recent years comes second to bachata, and regaeton as well.
Promo Only is a good starting point (latin tropical) for all of these varieties, and always labels what style they are. I think the best thing to do is to get a music head with good taste(has to be tried and tested) to give you a list of top jams. This should be better than a billboard chart or a promo only disc, because it will reflect the region you are in. (this matters, much like east/west/south hip-hop.) I will be the first to admit I have a grasp on many genres, but I am a red headed step child when it comes to latin play. I always seek out the music lover and get her to help me pick the winners. You can easily test her /his skills out by having them pick 10 house or hip-hop songs as well. You can see for yourself how good they pick the tunes. And this is yet another way to do less listening in keeping up with the music. |

I think it's a good idea to have other DJs that you can talk with who are different in their style and play. You can also end up with referrals from each other. This way your getting the local take as PM mentioned..

I can help you if you want. I do many events here in Milwaukee's hispanic community. As of now, the hot tracks are regaeton and bachata as stated before. Some artists to consider are (Regaeton):Wisin Y Yandel, Daddy Yankee, and a duo called Jowell & Randy. Bachata has many forms, but the most popular at the moment is Aventura. Hit me up for more info if you want more traditional Latin or any other type.
