Is there any programs that will break a song down in to individual tracks for each "instrument" and vocals? in the studio when recording u have ur mixing board and and u lay some tape down and write kick, tomb, clap, etc. 4 each slider, but if u are not recording a song and want to do a remix how do u break the song down? Do u just have to know the people at the label and get a master or something?

Google it. I know some people try to remove the vocal track out, but it's never studio quality without recording the mix and then remastering the individual tracks.....

You play out in SD at all?

There's no easy or quality way to do it. Look for accapellas, instrumentals and drum loops to do your remixes with.

That's a huge question. Everyone does it a little different.

For example, when I'm doing a remix, it depends on the kind of remix I'm doing. If all I'm doing is an extended mix (X-Mix style) then I'll usually start by dropping a drum section from the original track into a beat slicer so I can extract the original beats section by section (as much as possible). I take those samples and drop them into my drum sequencer and write an "intro" line and an "extro" line. After that, I render them into a file and start up my multi-track editor. I'll connect the intro, track, and extro (and edit as necessary), include any samples, and mix it down. Voila, done!

If it's a full on remix, then that depends. The pros usually have access to the original artist's vocal stems, drum lines, MIDI information, etc. If not, you can do as Pulse suggests and try to find (at least) instrumentals and accapellas to start with; from there the sky's the limit in terms of what you want to do using time stretching (for the vocals as necessary), VSTi's, drum sequencers and loops, effects, MIDI, the works.

If any of those terms are foreign to you, Google and Wikipedia are your friends. Best place to start is there, as you can find terms on your own time.

Beat slicer is a program. Many of the "big name" production suites come with them; FL Studio has Fruity Slicer, and I believe Reason's is called Dr. Rex. Anyway there's a few out there.

Never used either of those you mentioned, sorry.

Ryan and Pulse are right on as usual here. but don't get locked into the idea you have to slice up what is already done.

pro's usually have earned the right to access the accapellas, instrumentals, and in some cases, individual instrument and vocal tracks, but the rest of us undiscovered talent have to do it the hard way. once you learn the software and develop your skills you will be able to generate pretty much anything you need, except the vocals, and then if you can't get the originals you can always use "local talent".

for example, I got asked to sing for a Coldplay remix, before viva la vida was even released, by a guy in Colombia. he obviously couldn't get "the vocal" so he settled with me, and I still think it's the best actual remix out there. (approval for itunes release hopefully soon)

viva la vida remix

the best thing imo, is to just jump in with any program, and start out trying to recreate beats that you have on some of your favorite stuff. there is a good learning process here, and it is not only an important skill set, it is fun.

it's like learning to play the guitar. you must learn to play before you can do anything creative. to just jump into the creative without any skill whatsoever will just frustrate you.

i am no remix pro, but i am someone who wasted many hours and days because he didn't take the time to learn the software in the beginning.

and for a beginner i would recommend FL Studio. very easy to jump into with minimal reading, and very powerful once your in. (deadmau5 still uses regularly, need i say more) Smiler
