Hey, Sound Forge is sometimes a bit tricky here with the standard windows volume control, and I remember years back freaking out pissed off trying to figure this out.

Just double clicking your volume icon and setting volumes will not do anything for your record levels in the forge.

Double click your volume icon to display the full mixer volume control.

Then select the Options pull down.
Choose properties.
You then should see a "adjust volume for" with the options "playback" and "recording".
Choose recording and remember, sometimes the card will allow only recording from one channel at a time, so make sure your desired "line in" is selected with a check mark.

If you don't have "line in" available as a selection to view, then you are dealing with, as some have feared, mic only. Let us know.

Hi

Yes you are correct - I dont have a line in, just a mic in - but this is how I used to record previously so im presuming this will be ok?

Not really - you shouldn't be recording a line level into a mic level input. The level of a line signal is significantly higher than a mic level signal and the signal boosting applied to a mic input would increase the line signal and you'll likely end up with crappy audio.

2 things.

1. with the right adapter you can record with your mic in. the sound quality obviously will be lacking, but people use their cell phone, handheld recorders, video tapes, etc. it is at least functional for now, like as in, today.

2. i would recommend a usb / audio interface. don't worry about the brands, just know that for the most part, like anything else, you get what you pay for.(you are after all on a pioneer forum) Smiler pick up a copy of computer music magazine and see what they recommend at the time, or go to a related forum. this one is great for primarily dj'ing. you get alot more from any forum dedicated to that topic. google should give you a quick answer here to the one "computer recording forum" with the most hits, and thereby the largest community, and the most responses to your question.

i use a m-audio 410 connected to a mackie analog mixer that i had before there was firewire. i don't like the device, because it is labelled and advertised as a 4 input 10 output piece, but as i found out, it's only 2 at a time input.

so no i have the m-audio 2-10, and it's ok.

Yeah, the 4/10 is really a 2/8 - be sure to watch that the digital inputs/outputs aren't counted as part of the total if you specifically want to have a certain number of ins/outs.

Any USB soundcard will do provided it has ASIO driver support. I'd suggest you might want to look for a 2/4 or 4/4 type device (again, don't count digital!).

I like the Audio DJ 8 from native instruments sounds great but it is expensive.
