In my search for awesome sound, I'm trying to put together a kick-bum stereo for a car I don't yet own. :P
My requirements are simple: Must be loud enough to play loud and be heard outside the car when I want. Must be good enough so that I don't HAVE to play it loud all the time to get the best sound, like when all I want is to listen to some nice quiet stuff because my fiancee and I are using the car to... I mean... Price is a factor - nothing too expensive but I hate cheap parts that crap out under the slightest bit of load, because if there's one thing I've learned, it's that I ALWAYS put stuff under load. I'll be willing to spend lots in one area say: head than in others. Don't worry about fit etc. just suggest stuff. I'll worry about fitting the components when the time comes. What's your say, car audio guru's? -r- |

if you don't want to take up a lot of space with a sub/s, then kicker audio have mid-bass drivers (ssmb8 [8"] and ssmb6 [6.5"]) that will fit into your door. they may not be able to deliver right down to sub frequencies, but as it suggests - they have strong mid-bass range (30-500) from 350w peak and 175w rms for the ssmb8. in a way you could "use" your door with these speakers for kinda like a free-air sub application...
you can also get them in a set with tweeters that will take care of the higher frequencies 6x9 speakers (5x7s or 7x10s... depending on how much space you have), is more down to choice i think. based on what you want and how much you're willing to pay an amp a mate has told me to look at was the jl audio slash 450/4. not sure of the specs, but apparently runs plenty of power through 4channels at 4ohm headunit is really based on what you want. i mean there are hdd headunits, cds (also with mp3 or wma playback), mds, solid state memory heads... the choice is really up to the user! but in general, try to find a unit which can push 50w+ per channel < !--color--> |

First of all, go for a nice Head Unit. I allways like the top of the line in head units, but not the more expensive, what I mean, if you like Pio car audio, go for the Premier series, if like sonys, go for the ES series ( I had a 7 years old cassete unit ES working without problems with a CD changer, and the sound still better than most other units that are not top of the line).
For speakers, i personally dont like coaxials, I do preffer Componet systems. In Europe theres a many excelent brand speakers that are not expensive in there, but really expensive here in america, like MB Quart. Anyway, speakers placed in Doors loses aprox 50% of their performance, cus they are aiming to the floor. Getting a nice car sound its not as eazy, I had to wait almost 8 months to have the system that I currently have, and is not a competition system, only a nice moderate system. The best thing its going to the shop, listen to the systems, and if you like it, go for it. |

Quote: being able to choose where you place your speakers in smaller cars other than the door, can be more difficult due to less options. if there's no fixed rear shelf to use, it can make it difficult to install speakers there (cutting out the board from the thing they use to cover the boot of a hatch etc.) < !--color--> |

Ah, it's been a while since I've heard people talking about car stereos... I think it was back in high school

hmm.. the stereo in my dad's E Class Merc sounds pretty good, and if u turn the bass up to max the place turns into a vibrating tub.
i've also seen sum1 put a dual 18" subwoofer into their trunk. and no.. not for transporting ![]() but why don't u check out some Kenwood or Bose systems, those things are loud as hell for their size. |

Quote: I'm upgrading my system right now. Mixing, DV editing and car audio go hand in hand for me. My last system made me happy and lasted for 4 years then I lost one mid and one sub (they wear out like stylus). I'm now ready to upgrade with the latest and greatest. If you are a true audiophile I'd recommend: 2 x 12" Adire audio Brahma subwoofers ~ $300 each MB Quart QSD216 6.5" component set ~ $500 Hifonics Brutus BX1500 D-Class amplifier ~ $300 Alpine V12 or your choice for the mids/highs ~ $250 Head unit 4volt will be fine.. Kenwood, Alpine whatever Build or buy an enclosure that's sealed 1.0 cu. ft. You'll get what they call "world class" SQ (sound quality) with crazy SPL (sound pressure level). Basically, it will be very musical sounding but get loud and yet very detailed sound. Expect around 145+ db if you want to turn it up. I run a Kenwood in dash x-over/EQ. When you want to be civilized you just hit one of your three preset settings. Program one setting with the bass down low so you can turn it up at moderate volume levels and that keeps the girlfriends/wifey happy. You'll just hit that button once and it'll sound full but not bassy. That's if you want to go pretty much high end and you really want something special. You can probably build a system for half that price. Look for Adire Audio Tempests or Shivas instead or Infinity Perfects. Also look at Kicker, JL, or Alpine subs if you are on a budget. You can also opt for Infinity mids/highs and save half that dough. Hope this helps. ![]() |
