Oooh boy is this one gonna be fun!

mikeymstar is the winner for our "What Kind of Contest" suggestion contest so here's what he proposed:

quote:
We can do a mix set of 4 to 5 songs one song from each genre, Dance,Rock,Pop,Country,Rap
A good DJ should be able to mix in all genres not just one.

Dance/Tecno
Pop/Top-40
Rap/R&B/Hip-Hop
Country
Rock

Or a set of one song from each the 70's,80's,90's,and the 2000's

We must list all gear that was used. or all pioneer gear that was used.

I've modified that a bit to provide us with the contest itself... BEHOLD!

The Contest

Create a 10 minute mix consisting of exactly 5 songs from 5 genres from 5 decades. You pick which song comes from when!

You may either submit the mix as audio only or if you have the capability, create the mix as a video!

Here are the nitty-gritties...

Requirements

- You must be a registered forum member in good standing (never before banned or warned - yes, I can check).

- You must make a mix as per "The Contest" above. The mix time must be no shorter than 9:30, no longer than 10:30.

- Submissions must be received no later than Midnight (Pacific) July 31st August 31st, 2008. That gives you 1 ANOTHER month to plan, perfect, record and submit your mix. Mixes submitted after that date will not be considered.

- Your contest entry must be as a reply to "The Contest" Entries thread. Entries not linked to that thread will not be considered. Your entry post must also have a tracklist (Artist / Song / Mix / Year / "Edit" if you edited the track) as well as a listing of the equipment used during the mix.

- Where do you host your file? Well, if you make a video, YouTube is a no-brainer. If you're making an audio-only entry, you can use somewhere like YouSendIt.com or another file-sharing service if you don't have web-hosting already. If you're really stuck, email me (address at the bottom of this post) and I'll try and sort you out.

- NO POST PRODUCTION IS PERMITTED. If we believe that there was post-recording editing done to the mix, you will be disqualified. Pre-editing of tracks (for length) is permitted, but must be noted in the tracklist with "Edit".

- You must live on Earth. It doesn't matter what country, this contest is open to EVERYBODY.

- You must be living. No living-dead or near-dead allowed.

- Winners will be announced after all entries have been received, reviewed and a winner chosen. There is no date for this as the amount of time required depends on the number of entries.

Prizes!

As I said in the preliminary thread...
quote:
I'm moving and while packing stuff up, I came across a treasure-trove of Pioneer goodness. I have many shirts (yes, including the coveted "J'adore le DJ" shirts) and some other odds and ends. Who knows, maybe I can get the Pioneer guys to sweeten the deal with a pair of headphones or maybe even a player or two?

I'm still waiting to confirm the inclusion of the high-value prizes - the prizes order will be determined when I've gathered all the prizes and know just what we're giving away. Regardless of what they are, you know you want'm.

Mount up and get those decks rockin!

Any questions, please post them here and not in the Entries thread.

COOL!!! Now to get my mixing cap on!!

When you say no editing, does that include no normalizing, eq'ing, etc. Or are you talking about adding stuff in to the mix that wasn't there already. Such as samples.

Not a remix - you can edit the track to cut out a verse or a bridge in order to help it fit better into the 10 minutes you have.

All you're doing is chopping things out - not adding anything. No EQs, no effects (in the edit; live in the mix is okay), no samples (except live).

We can review in AC over beveragessssss. Also I think playing the winner in front of the Expo crowd would be a nice plus, we'll announce who did the mix and play it for the attendees.....

No pressure.......

OOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooohhh....

Depending on the prizes, I may partake! I'll stick my thinking/mixing cap on.

Question that probably has no relevance at all: do the decades have to be sequential, whether in the mix or total? (i.e. if you start in the 50's does the next song have to be 60's, then 70's etc? Or can you grab a song from the 20's (if you were so inclined), one from the 90's, etc. and throw them together any way you like?)

Non-sequential. Any decade, any order.

Stupid question. Only 1 song per decade, right? I mean, can't be 2 tracks from the 70's, then everything else.

How will mash-ups play into this?
Lets say I have a song from the 80's thats in a mash-up with a song from the 2000's. I don't want to use that as two songs but can we use it as one of them?

No mashups unless you are creating them yourself on the fly.

Only 1 song per decade.

Damn good question. What we call "classic rock" now was probably labelled "pop" back then.

If it makes it easier, you can Email me with the track list and I'll give it a thumbs up or down for the rules. Also using the release date of the album will help or a ASCAP referrence for the release.

I would, if I was spinning this, go for a variety of the 4-5 tracks and keep them in a similar bpm realm..

I can gladly give an example, but those tracks will be voided so just Email me with questions.

Hi guys, long time reader, first time poster!

This contest is a REALLY great idea & I've had loads of ideas flying through my head for the mix.

Just a question regarding acapellas. Are they allowed first of all? Secondly; if I use a 00's hip hop acapella over a 90's track or whatever, does that count as two tracks from two decades from two genres?

I would say acapellas don't count as a track because of the lack of beat. Mashups must be on the fly as stated earlier.

I would focus on the 5 tracks and the set-up and watch the mashups...

Couple questions...

1) X-mixes, ultimixes etc. (aka ready-made/pre-produced remixes) are ok, yeah?

2) If I use a remix of a track (for example a remix of billie jean, say), that counts as whatever genre and artist and year it comes out under for the REMIX, not the original, right?
