Hi guys,

I'm thinking to make a group on facebook and start sharing my own remixes/edits/mashes.

I would do this to help get my name out there. Do you think this is a good idea? Letting other DJs getting their hands on my own remixes?

Thanks Smiler

You can always litter them with drops of your name, but the practise is pretty much a standard in the world of DJs. I can't help but think that myspace might be better for this????

I know what you mean Jay. But I'm asking if sharing my own remixes with others would actually help me more instead of being the only one plays them.

I was thinking to put them on myspace too.

I think your better off trying to get on a site that allows for critiqueing and exposure. I would highly recommend the best site for this being www.mixaddicts.com

Also try to get gigs or even better, iternet radio of other radsio mix shows that will show off your skillz to the world.

To be honest your skill level has nothing to do with anything. It's who you know not what you know that'll get you anywhere with DJing.

I agree that its who you know to a point though. If you sck then you can kknow anyone and go nowhere. But a bit of luck, a lot of practice and a little help and your in biz.

Nice site Darknez. I still have a soft spot for the www.mixaddicts.com guys. Very nice about the mixes that end up there and good critiques. I'll check out the other one as well...

I know were you're comming from but I just want to make it clear that perfecting your skills will not ensure you a successful carrer as a DJ. Go out to any of your local clubs and I'm sure you'll hear some jackass playing and you know your ten times the DJ and yet this jerkoff is the one with the residence.

Guys, I know that having the best DJ skills doesn't guarantee that you become a big DJ and get gigs. This concerns my other topic "What is wrong with "DJs" these days?"

Anyhow, I became a member of mixaddicts but no one has posted any mixes up?

I'm checking out musicv2 now seems pretty cool.

Thanks for the help guys Smiler

Uploading your work to a site can certainly be a good promotion tool but you'll still have to get people to take the time to look you up on the net. I wouldn't expect a label rep to be scouring the net to find you either.

It's hard work to stand out because everyone is a DJ, everyone has a website, everyone makes there own tracks. It's why I quit spinning for a few years. I was good but getting nowhere.

Peace

Speaking as someone who is similarly trying to get more exposure, bigger, better, stronger, etc...

I agree with Jay, and Just, and I think it comes down to a balance. You must pay your dues, spinning, mixing, meeting people, passing out your information, garnering listens, playing out(even if only at house / dorm parties) spending time on your website and promo sites(youtube, myspace, etc) passing out "mixtapes"

These are dues that must be paid, and have been paid by everyone who didn't have the funds to pay someone else to do them. As you do these things you will build a foundation around your skills, and reputation. If it is balanced and effective, you will grow. If you are in the right place at the right time, and your skills are on the level, you may be given an opportunity to a higher place in the chain. Be ready.

Peter sounds like you know what's going on. That's what I've been doing for a long time. I must say this is hard and takes a very long time for something to happen. Anyhow, good luck to you!

Just, I could never give up what I love the most. I put my mind to it that this is what I want to do and I will no matter what. Smiler

Brick walls are there to seperate the people who will stop at them and the ones that will work to get over them. You only have 2 choices on this planet at any given time; you stand and go for it, or you lay down and don't. The reality of being a DJ or being anything you want is quite simple- how badly do you want it.... Only you can show that to the rest of the world.

Remember if you are faced with the wall, climb or sit, no one got to the top with out a climb..

I quit for a few years because I became very discouraged at all the politics involved. Playing the political feild well is probably more important than your mixing skill level. It really is who you know not what you know.

I quit buying records because I had so much money invested in music with few opportunities to play outside of my home. The political feild of DJing killed it for me. After years of playing the game I was burnt up and sick of it all. I couldn't stnad the people involved in the scene and nolonger wanted to be a part of it. I think I quit for about 5 years. I stopped going out to my local bull**** clubs. I got a Sirrius satallite radio one Christmas and tuned into the dance music channels. BTW, let me just say I love satallite radio. Anyway, this last new years I had the crazy idea I'd go out to the clubs and dance. Everywhere I went was rap. That was the straw that broke the cammels back! I got a loan and bought my own mobile sound system. I'm ready to do this, profit or loss. It's something I have to do. DJing is a part of who I am. Since it's my system I don't have to play politics and that bull**** can stay out of my life.

Thanks guys. I've got a gig tomorrow night at a classy new blues club. I've had my eye on the place but realized its a blues club. A previous opportunity fell through and that bummed me out since they made it sound like it was gonna happen. When it came time to do something they flaked out on me.

I stopped into the blues club cause I've noticed they haven't been doing that well and turns out they've been intrested in trying something different during the week because most of there business is just on the weekends when the older crowd comes out to hear blues. They want to try and get a younger crowd on a week night so I might be what they're looking for. Smiler

I just want somewhere to pump my new system. I went out to a party an old friend was throwing at a really nice gay club whose sound system I remember being the best in town. This time I found it totally lacking in bass. They had 4 EAW speakers mounted from the ceiling and no subwoofers as far as I could tell. The sound was dissapointing. They may as well of had some cheap **** hanging from the cieling because it was not impressive.
