Do a search on this site for ishkur. It is a site that defines EVERY type of House, Dance, Disco, etc. into it's sub headings and then gives you aduio examples of them. I don't remember who posted it, I think Stevie_Ray or Wicho or I don't remember.

Although there's sixty different styles of each (house and trance) you can sorta lump the two together for your own purposes. The best way I found to describe them is if you have a track that has a drum line that sounds a little more "real" (could be done on a drumkit) then it's house - otherwise it's trance. And you'll never find a house track with a bpm above 132 - at least not that I've ever found.

check out www.dancerecords.com . You can sample music there for everything they sell. The cool thing is, on the right side of the page they break down what types of genre the music fits into. This should teach you a little bit about the different types.

kinda but not quite. there is plenty of house and house sub genre's above 132......

the way i tell my non music friends when they ask whats the difference between house and trance is simple. listen to the rhythm of the song. house, be it progressive, deep, vocal, whatever its driven by percussion. dump do do duug. whereas trance its the melodic elements that drive the rhythm. the arppegiated synths, the pads, the hoover basslines, they are the rhythmic force in the track. of course there are plenty of tracks that blur the line between the two genre's. but thats the EASY way to find out.
