Dell's are decent but notoriously un-upgradeable (but then, it's a laptop, you can't upgrade it much anyway), sort of like compaq (and I just hate compaq) - they use all their own proprietary hardware which sometimes doesn't quite "talk" to other stuff very well. I've got a desktop Dell that's getting older but I've never had any issues with it whatsoever (then again, I wasn't allowed to touch it ... "use your own computer!" mom screams...)
Also I've found that the price-to-machine ratio is really brutal. You're paying a lot for not as much machine as you might get from another manufacturer - I find that you're paying for the name. HOWEVER, they're pretty decent machines, I've never seen one go bad, and I'm sure you'll love it! -r- |

I've got an inspiron D600 arriving at work tomorrow. I've been using Dell's at work for the last 3.5 years. Never had any serious problems with them. Had a keyboard problem on a laptop once, but they sent a tech out to fix it next day.

I'm very much a "computer" kinda guy .. so I can tell ya some stuff bout it. I think Dells are excellent machines (along with MPCs.. former Microns). While I dislike laptops for one reason that I saw mentioned: Can't upgrade [bleep]. That is really a downfall, but if you're not playing games or running an illegal music market, you should be OK. Their computers are reliable and well built, so you should have no trouble.

Dew,
I spends 10k+ a year with dell, for day gig, and I've never been dissapointed. Dell has THE best customer service and nobody can compete on dollar value. I used to be a big Micron, now MCS or something, fan but Dell is too easy, too good, & too everything right! Only have experience with 2 Dell laptops and have no complaints, other than the complaint I have about all laptops, not very user upgradable, but such is the laptop beast. My only suggestion is that you get the most powerful, feature packed unit you can afford and never, and I mean never, look back. Hope that helps, Peace! |

Got my dell. It was setup weird though... the screen resolution was set for 120 dpi instead of 96... so all the text was nice and big, but images looked like ass.
Once I set that back to 96dpi all was well. Not sure why dell did that by default. |

Quote: I agree . But I'm not trying to start a war. I only say this due to the fact that I've heard F/S is more stable on Macs. But if I used my laptop for other stuff I might choose one with Win. But Dell having good cust support? Dude!!!! It's outsourced, or at least it used to be. I know their cust svc and tech support where outsourced about 2 months ago, but it's not like I call all the time. But then I read an article that customers complained and they yanked outsourcing. But then again I've read other articles saying that even though huge companys are cutting back on outsourcing, it's not 100 % as lead to believe by some. It's more like a 30 % cut back. So basically I'm saying that I read too many news publications!!! ![]() |
