ToDJ Pulse/Chris,
Do you have a sampler on your home system, which you use for remixing etc., if so I am looking for some help, I am thinking of getting a sampler, but am not sure where to start.

Thanks,
Matt

I've got a great sampler known as Sound Forge. I use that in combination with Vegas (both programs by Sonic Foundry) and they kick ars!

If you are looking for a PC/software sampler, try looking into Gigasampler from Nemesis. Saw a demo on a trade show, and it really looked nice.

i agree, sound forge and vegas are THE best two pieces of software out there for sampling/sequencing (sequencing in audio, as in raww wav).

Thanks for the feedback.

How about more portable (non PC) samplers(Rolands, etc.) any recommendations?

The more $$$ you bring, the more features you get. The R01and VariPhraze (sp?) would be the sampler of my choice, because it can do time-stretching/compressing in real time; I guess they must have looked at the Master Tempo funcion from Pioneer. The thing is quite expensive though, so I'll be saving my money for the new CDJ's, 'cause I think they will add more to my setup than any sampler can.

What's the difference between Vegas and Acid? I've used Acid quit a bit and I'm just wondering what the similarities and differences are.

They're both very powerful in their own right, but they have their differences:

Acid is a looping program, Vegas is a multi-track assembler.

Acid allows you to "paint" samples into a time grid, aligning things with the tempo, time stretching automatically, re-sampling to fit a certain key...

Vegas is more like a production studio - you have the tracks, you can assign plugin efx, control the mix of each one, volume envelopes... and it can handle large files WAY better than the Acid engine.

I used Vegas to compile the remix I did recently (go to Myplay.com, my email's djpulse@eticxe.com - ANTISPAMMING, REPLACE ETICXE with EXCITE, password is music - get BOTH mixes to truly see what I did to the song - if you want more info, just email me).

As far as non-PC samplers are concerned, if you're looking for a good MIDI machine I'd defeinitely reccommend an Akai MPC-2000. I just rip samples off records or CDs into the Akai, sequence them in MIDI, then sequence them AGAIN in raw wav using ACID (since raw wav sequencing allows the use of more effects). I want to try that Vegas program though.

Oh yeah this is my first post but I've actually been reading this forum for over a year, just been too lazy to register. I've been DJing for about 3 years, producing for 1.

If you can handle having to do mix downs cos of limited Polyphony try the Roland SP-808... you can get away wqith using it as a multitrack recorder too.
