You mean hearing the difference? What % are you using on the 800s.

Ya the bpm display is only so accurate. it could also be a key of the song issue your up against, but ultimately it does come down to practising and practising....

I agree with Ruben, use your ears! If you are using speakers/monitors make sure to have them pointing towards you.
Another good idea is to try beatmatching the same song i.e. play the same song on both decks and then beatmix one into the other. Then try the same process with a different track but similar to the first. Then try mixing the first and second tracks! There are plenty of tutorial videos on the net if you go looking... Don't think I can post the addresses here but Google them. And don't get frustrated! Practice makes perfect and it does take time! |

You shouldn't rely on the BPM counter. It's lazy. It's like relying on the SatNav then finding you don't know where you are. Practice matching them without and try to use it only as a guide for when things get messy.

Also try making sure that you have it together in your headphones.
-It's not always going to be possible to have proper monitoring set up (e.g having some speakers pointed straight at you). If you throw a party with a PA then you will probably have to completely rely on your headphones. (NB__BUY GOOD QUALITY HEADPHONES; IF YOU DONT YOU WILL F@CK YOUR EARS.. Bad headphones means you will have to crank up the volume on them to hear the nuances of the music). |

Some good advice with particular reference to the 800 / mk2 is to practice using the manual sampler function, rather than relying on the auto buttons. - This mean you are able to use various industry standard cd decks. It's also a very useful technique for mixing.
Sometimes a tune you want to mix will have a short intro / will suddenly change / have a breakdown etc. Using the sampler gives you a nice constant beat, which will allow you to use the snare / bass to mix out of a tune, then hit out when you are ready. This is a nice development from the old idea of playing one tune over another with vinyl as it gives you lots of possibilities for remixing on the fly in a "dj" sort of way (as opposed to laptop noodling on ableton). -Getting a decent mixer with high/mid/bass cuts will mean this is a possibility. |
