Hi I am from Australia and am buying a CDJ 1000 MK3 for my boyfriend .. I am buying through a asian distributor and need to choose either the american or japanese version - does anyone know which is better suited? Either way I will need to buy an adaptor and transformer.

You should buy the Australian version - that way you not only ditch the requirement for a converter, but you also get a WARRANTY!
