The reason for this post is to give some feedback to Pioneer and its designers, since they're probably working on a new model as we speak, so please don't take this as a rant. Working as a professional DJ for 20 years, I've been through a lot of different brands and models including the original 1000, MK2, MK3 other brands not worth mentioning. First of all, I wanted to say that I considering all alternatives, the Pioneer players are the best choice for any professional DJ, but like with any revolutionary cutting edge product, there are few things I would like to mention.
First, the memory card is probably the most useful and convenient feature allowing storage of cue/loop points, hot cues and waveforms, however it also could be the most annoying. Since all DJ's use at least 2 players, why can't the cards be automatically synchronized through perhaps a cable linking both players, so that when you store a cue point on one player the same data is written to both cards. Copying the cards takes a very long time if you have a lot of cue points and copying via PC is not too reliable since on few occasions, my data was corrupted just by reading it and thus the card useless. Other, more minor problems are the waveform display that does not work correctly on certain songs and although the resolution has improved vs. the MK2, I believe it still could visually be more accurate. All CDJ-1000 models I've had (12 units) have sometimes exhibited a problem that is very hard to diagnose. I'm talking about the sudden stop of playback. It has happened on every 1000 I've had, on regular pressed CD's as well as CDR's. I've tried many different remedies including external voltage regulators, different CDR brands, slow recording speeds, etc, without any luck. Luckily, the problem doesn't appear too often. Also, sometimes after inserting a CD, instead of audio, all I hear is white noise. Like the problem described above, this is very random and can be usually taken care of by re-inserting the CD or powering the unit off/on. Overall the units are holding up relatively well. The play buttons on my units have lost their "click", but still work OK. The surface is very prone to scratches, so it would be nice if the next generation player would be more scratch proof, however my biggest wish is for the new generation players to integrate with a PC, while retaining all of the players functions (to the best of my knowledge, no current DJ software is compatible with hot cues, cue points, etc). That said, I hope the MK4's will be coming out soon, because My MK3's are aging and I'd love to replace them. Please feel free to share your thoughts and comments. |
