What would be the best way to record digitally with the -20db cut in mind?

I've been recording in logic and end up normalizing the recording to compensate for the loss. Is there a better way to do this? Should i just boost the signal 20db instead??

Thanks for your help

Since you may go over by a touch in the recording, instead of boosting it +20db, try +17db and then see where the mix is. This will help if you were to go over at all it won't clip.

I guess I'm wondering if it's better to normalize or simply boost the signal.

Normalization and volume boost are two completely different things - go do a bit of research and you'll see how they differ and why you only want to boost the volume.

Is there an advantage recording digitally especially since you have to amplify the signal after recording?

Specifically, is there a sound quality upgrade taking place when recording digitally?

IF there is, it'd seem a bit misleading when there is already a "record out" on a mixer.

Digital is better because you don't introduce noise and signal degradation through the digital > analog converter, analog cable (which is always a place to introduce outside noises from electromagnetic sources) and again in another analog > digital converter. Do it straight digital > digital.

There's no "upgrade" it simply not "downgrading" it from the digital state you already have.

The "record out" is used as an analog output for those who want a constant level and don't want to occupy the Master (or already have something connected).
