I've used an SM58 with a DJM400 and had no problem. Did you adjust the mic gain enough?

So yeah, you just need a new mic. ANY mic will work provided it doesn't require phantom power (48V).

Whatever they have locally that's within your budget. There are literally hundreds of different mics out there.

I'd go for an SM58.
The things are almost indestructible and they're cheap enough. -r- |

Ned, we don't think the SM58 is a bad mic, we thing YOUR SM58 is broken (or the cable is). You tried it in two mixers and it still sounds like garbage so it's likely the microphone itself.

I've got a few but the SM58 is my choice. You can beat the tar out of it and it continues to sound great.

I used an SM58 last night on a DJM400 with an old Mic cable, and it sounded awesome. The weakest link is always the cable, then the device attached to the cable. I think if you get another 58 you'll be fine. If money is an issue then look at AKG, they have a 58 style mic with an on/off button that is about half the price of the 58.

I to have a probelm with my mic and DJM 400...mine is I dont get any sound at all...I think it might be the cable, I bought it from Guitar Center and had the sales person get me the cable.....I asked for a mic cable xlr to 1/4...im thinking he gave me a regular cable not a mic cable and that is why it doesnt work...my mic is a Behringer XM8500 Microphone
...my wife bought it for me thinking she was doing something nice for me....it wokrs fine for what I need........am I right to guess I have the wrong cable? |

Unless the wires are crossed, any XLR to 1/4" should work just fine. Have you tested it out in another mixer? With another mic?

I think I know what the problem is!
The 400 mixer does not have a balanced input for mic so you need to use a unbalanced cord, you know, a 6.3mm plug with only 2 rings! try that Jorgen Jonassen |

I use the 400 every week for Wedding Ceremonies and I simply plug my XLR mic cords into 1/4" adaptors and into the mic inputs on the 400. Whether wired or wireless, never an issue. If you've tried new cables and new mic, then either try tech support or the POP and see about a return; it should work fine right out of the box on both sides...

I have the same issue with my DJM-400. I have a Sennheiser e840 microphone (balanced) with XLR output. I bought an XLR-to-1/4" cable, plugged it into the DJM-400, and I get no sound. The mic is brand new, was tested in the store, and works with both my amplifier and my Audio-8.
After doing a lot of research, I finally stumbled onto this forum, and I have to say, the post by Jorgen above is the only place I have seen where it's documented that the DJM-400 uses an unbalanced (!) microphone input. No where in the manual does it mention this, aside from the wiring diagram, where, if you look really closely, the 1/4" mic jack shown has only one insulator (ie. unbalanced). Nowhere in the specs or instructions do I see a mention of this important fact. After reading this post, I called Pioneer, and the tech support engineer confirmed that the input is, indeed, unbalanced. He also didn't seem to consider this odd in any way. As a vocalist, I have to say it's almost unheard of for a serious performer to buy an unbalanced microphone, due to line-noise issues. Furthermore, a balanced input can usually handle both balanced and unbalanced jacks. Would it have killed Pioneer to have used a balanced input, which would have covered all possibilities, and offered the noise-reduction necessary for serious performance? Now I have to go out and buy an adapter for my cable, which I only bought in the first place because Pioneer doesn't offer an XLR mic input (the industry standard). So whereas I was miffed at first that they don't have XLR speaker output or mic input, now I'm positively enraged that they have gone completely off on a tangent on this "feature." Worse, they don't make any attempt to document this, and I had to stumble upon a forum posting to figure it out. In any case where something is not likely to be plug-and-play, the least they could do is to document. This is just another example of Pioneer cutting corners and falling short of the mark. In most respects, this is a nice little mixer, but I would have paid a bit extra for the missing features, which I can't imagine would have greatly increased the cost. Very irritating. |
