3 vs 8 hotcues on CDJs

The big benefit with CDJs has been the fact that they were predictable and instantly familiar when using them across venues/gigs.

With the new CDJ 2000 NXS2, the addition of 8 hotcues (similar to Pioneer controllers) introduces an issue. DJs that prepare tracks in RB and use all 8 hotcues only end up having 3 to use on CDJ2000s.

Unless you're David Guetta or Tiesto, it is difficult to request Nexus2 on riders so we end up playing on the CDJ2000 nexus with 3 hotcues.

I understand that over the next few years, venues will eventually switch to the newer units but until then, Pioneer owes it to the DJs, venues and fans to add 8 hotcues to existing units. This can be achived with a firmware update that allows uusers to access all 8 using the touch strip. Similar to slip rolls where pushing on parts of the strip will trigger rolls, pushing on the strip should trigger the 5 additional cues.

Of course, DJs that want the physical buttons will dish out the $4000 to upgrade their home studios but this upgrade has caused a huge divide in the pioneer line.

I'm at a crossroads since I use 8 hotcues and am fine when using my controller, or using RBDJ, but the second I show up at a gig with USB sticks i'm stuck using my first 3 cues.

I play in venues on everything from old 900s to nexus2s to the standard 2000s / nexus and even a xd-rx for portable stuff.

I use A, B, C as into, breakdown, outro with B also optionally being a jump point to say final chorus or a vocal starting point.  Then all the other hotcues are the extra non essential cues if I'm in a venue with nice new gear.  I then double everything up with the memory function so if you are on older gear you can at least instant double it over to the other deck and then use the memory points to jump to where you need.  It's a bit more fiddly but at least it means you can have some consistency in workflow during this transitional period.

That's how I work it anywho :-)
