What is the Level/Depth knob set at?

DJM 800 send / return not working
Hi guys,
I couldn´t find any similar thread and I feel quite stupid for this, but although I know my way around a large SSL console, I´m obvs too stupid to work a send return on my DJM 800.
So, I´m going out the send jacks into a stereo guitar pedal and back into the return jacks of the DJM 800. The FX selector is switched to SND/RTN, the effect applied to corresponding channel (tried them all, from 1 - 4 and Master).
As soon as I hit the on/off effect button audio cuts off completely. No sound whatsoever. When I turn up the level/depth knob, I hear the fully effected return signal. But no dry signal coming through. It´s like the Send / return path is working like an insert and cutting all audio from the dry signal.
What am I doing wrong??? Many thanks in advance

When the Level/Depth knob is at MIN I get no sound at all, when FX is turned on.
When I slowly move it towards MAX I only increase the volume of the fully (insert) effected channel signal. Which would be ok, if the dry, uneffeceted channel would still come through and I could blend this signal into the dry one.
But how it is operating atm, it doesn´t make much sense to use, as it is operating as an insert, but routed through a send return path. I would have to level match the LEVEL / DEPTH knob with the channel gain (no idea how possible while playing, haha) and blend the effect via the dry/wet knob of my guitar pedal....But that´s nonsense.

This is the intended operation of the send/return on the DJM-800. We have incorporated a different type of send/return on the DJM-900NXS2 featuring a switch allowing you to choose an Aux Effect or an Insert Effect.
