DJM-450 Microphone Level

Dear Pioneer DJ,

I have reached out to Sweetwater as well to see if they can get us connected somehow. Pulse, you're usually great at getting us assistance- hoping this gets to you. We briefly also touched on this at NAMM.

It seems as though the Microphone runs very “hot" for the DJM-450.

I am using a Wireless Shure SM-58- I have used the older PGX Model as well as the Newer BLX model and both sound very loud even when the knob is turned very low… this is a problem because there is not enough room to adjust volume and fin tune to the appropriate level.

I find myself having to constantly adjust the Master Volume knob and the Mic Knob and this then throws everything off because then I have to adjust the other levels as well making music then sound too low.

This is something that should be visited in a firmware update- hopefully very soon as it is quite problematic for simple use.

Perhaps the db input levels could be adjusted , or make a setting for it in the settings menu, or add a "pad" in the firmware?

I have attached a photo of what is the only workable area on the knob for the mic to try to visually show what I mean.

Your assistance with this would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you.

Respectfully, Jason “Cova” Covarrubias

Yes,  This is the issue as described above - in pretty clear detail. - forgive me- it just seems like we keep re-iterating this issue over and over.

The sound was not particular distorted... That is unless I had the Master Volume particular high...

The issue in this case is that the volume is just too high... it is much too loud... This ends up being an issue when using the microphone since the mic being too loud would typically lead to feedback- especially when used with a PA setup such as a Mobile DJ would use. (The problem is NOT with the setup... since the speakers are placed where they would normally be placed and where no issue comes up when using other mixers).

I have tried lowering the db for the mic input by adjusting the wireless mics that I have used to -10 db, but the issue still persisted... I have now tried an XLR pad that was sent to me by my dealer... as a gesture of them trying to support me in this case, since Pioneer DJ unfortunately has done nothing to resolve this... the XLR Pad is -20 db... so removing the -10 db from the Mic and leaving the Pad of only -20 db... I notice that now I am able to raise the volume to a higher level on the rotary knob... but it still is a bit peculiar maybe seems like -20 is too much... regardless it just doesn't adjust well I have to constantly adjust the mic level to avoid feedback... this issue does not present itself when using any other mixer, or even my XDJ-AERO. (which had a built in physical attenuation knob)

Another item I JUST noticed recently that I believe may be tied to this (which is the only reason I present this here in hopes that the engineers take note of this too)... I plugged in my phone via a lightning cable  to the available USB slot for insert and Aux effect etc... when that is routed over to the AUX knob... it is SUPER LOUD... again not sure if that is related to this issue... if both signals run on the same bus, but I am presenting it here as well for consideration... it is evident that the testing done on this unit must have been flawed somehow and perhaps not truly mimicking a live setup.

Please note: This Microphone issue is present regardless of what type of Microphone I have used...Cheap, Intermediate, Wired, Wireless etc.

Problem is Mic input is just too loud and there is no way to adjust it... if this is the case then sadly the mic feature of the DJM 450 ( a mixer released less than a year ago) is at best flawed and at worst useless.

I think when the testing was conducted the mic may have been tested while the mixer was at low levels for its Master Output... which is not the way it would be setup at a live scenario.

Your help, consideration and attention to this is certainly VERY appreciated.

Thank you!

Hello all,

DJM engineers tested and measured the audio levels of major DJM mixers when used with wireless microphones.

First of all, please understand the MIC Volume curve specifications of all the Pioneer DJ mixers including DJM-450 are designed to be used primarily with wired microphones instead of wireless microphones.

Generally speaking, the output levels of wireless microphones are much higher than usual wired microphones and the levels cannot be considerably lowered in the microphones side depending on the models.

This is why the MIC volume level of DJM-450 should be set at lower than the center position and it is recommended to set at between 8:00 and 12:00.

The possible measures engineers would like to recommend is:

  • The output level of the BLX series' INSTRUMENT OUT (PHONE) is very large. If you want to use the current INSTRUMENT OUT, please try using a XLR-PHONE conversion cable from MIC OUT (XLR) to DJM-450 if you hear too high level or distortion.

Sorry, the answer is almost the same as the first reply to you. However, please understand that this is how DJM-450 mixer hardware is designed and it cannot be changed by the firmware. The engineers would like to design future products considering wireless microphones to be used with them.

We really appreciate your insightful and precious feedback.

Sorry for the inconvenience and thank you very much for your kind understanding.

Best regards,

CRM, Pioneer DJ
