ask on seratos forum too, they are the ones that make you use their hardware. the 900 has the serato "chip" built into to enable the software licensing for use

DJM 850 Serato?
Hi,
As I checked the internal schematics of the djm850 unit, I wondered why there is no option to buy an optional firmware with support of serato, same like it supports the traktor....
Lets admin it -the fact is that the mixer is build around few dsp chips and fpga and there is no hw magic so this is all about the firmware (sorry but the djm-900srt is a "marketing scam" with blue leds :-) )
Is there any specific reason other then a licensing, why there is no option of purchasing an optional firmware, so I can choose, which dvs my mixer will support?
Thanks!

Its really about a chip? If its not a secret - what is the magic component in my 850 for the traktor? I haven't found any......
because Traktor you pay for the software end and licensing and then the mixer is just your sound card and the decks are your controller all via USB, Serato does it where the licensing part to enable the decks is in the hardware so the hardware MUST be built as "Serato certified" to enable the deck, thats why you pay for the traktor software but what serato technically, the software is free but not usable unless you own a serato piece of hardware. it's 2 TOTALLY different ways they do it things so it really cannot be compared.
Traktor, VDJ, Mixvibes all do it where you can use any sound card pretty much, Serato took the opposite approach where you NEED to use a serato cert sound device
Ah I see - thanks for explaining. :)
