[SOLVED] Recording a set (DJM800 to MOTU828): XLR to jack or RCA to jack?

Hey,

I'm recording a mix from my DJM800 to a sound interface, Motu 828 mkii. Which would be better, to record out from Master 1 (XLR) to the Motu (jack), or Master 2 (RCA) to Motu (jack)?

I'm aware that XLR is balanced etc.

Many thanks for your help!

@Tom > I would use the recording output; it's designed for being able to capture adequate levels regardless of what the master level is set at. So long as your channels are peaking around 0dB, if the master is way low or redlining, your recording will be just fine.

You don't need a balanced output as that is primarily for reduction of noise over long cable runs; a short run to your recorder can use RCA.

If you have the ability to use the digital-out, that would be the highest quality.

Thanks so much pulse. I'm getting a guy to make up a cable, rca to 1/4 jack. Does the rca end need to split into two at the end, or can it be two separate cables,

You shouldn't need to have a guy make one, there are off-the-shelf RCA-to-1/4" cables available.

Your cable should look like this:

Ok great, thanks Pulse. With the rec out, if you change the master volume during the mix (ie, turn the master level knob up or down), will that affect the sound level that the rec out records?

I'm a bit confused how rec out works - does it not record the same sound that comes through the master 1/2 outs? I try not to alter the master level during a mix, but just change the trims on the individual channels if they redline or are too quiet.

(Some people are saying you can also use the booth TRS out to record, but I've hooked my monitors up to that, so that's not really an option).

Never use the booth-out to record as you have no sense of the actual levels; using the REC out is exactly what it's for... it's in the name! ;)

When using REC out, the master knob does NOT affect the levels, but everything else works the same way - crossfader, effects, etc. All you would do is make sure your channel levels are consistent from track to track through your mix and you will have an evenly leveled mix. If you need to turn up the house volume, that's what the master knob is for.
