The "Key" field in rekordbox

Hello Rekordbox users...Wanted to know what software is out there to scan your music and creates the key to add it to the 'Key' field.  I'm currently using iTunes to create my playlists, and Mixed in Key to scan the mp3's.  In the preferences of Mixed In Key, its has a checkbox that says "Update custom "Initial Key" mp3 tag (viewable in Traktor etc.), but doesnt seem to work.  I scan the mp3 in mixed in key, import it into rekordbox, but nothing is showing in the key field (see attachment). I notified M.I.K. about this and they are looking into this.

Thanks in advance.

After analysing with MIK, try importing an MP3 diirectly into RekordBox without putting it through iTunes.

I use MIK and my MP3s always populate the Key field in RekordBox.

Mixed In Key has a user-setting for adding the key to the tag field and/or comments.

However, it only works with MP3 files.  It will not add tags to AIFF, even though AIFF supports tags.  Hopefully MiK will add this feature in a future update.

Try Beatunes, It has a 14 day trial and I found it to be a lot better than Mixed in Key, it's cheaper and has more features for sorting out your files.

Are you sure they are MP3 and not M4A.

RB wont read the comments from an M4A file for some reason... (is a fix on the way for this guys?)

the likely problem is that you have ticked the update traktor option, but you forgot to choose the store key result, i have added a pic at the bottom showing the options i have selected and as you can see it shows the key result in rekordbox

Nice pic DJ-Ric,

If Rics solved your problem,  rescan the files with MIK, and highlight all the files in your playlist and 'Reload Tags'

Try Rapid Evolution,

Its just as accurate as Mixed in key and it's free...

I don't know why everyone says mixed in key is the best....

there isn't allot of KEY detection software available and MIXED in key is just the most known software.. and thats why people recommend it.

DJ-Ric, my copy of MIK4 doesnt have the "Personalize" option.  strange.  I'm using version 4.1 and repeatedly, when I open MIK, it asks me up update to 4.1 which I already have, and its very annoying.

Reasons why people don't use RE:

  • the UI is quite hideous
  • the last full version was over a year ago
  • it suggests installation of a codec I'd never heard of before, which requires you to COMPILE IT YOURSELF
  • it's slow, like 4-5x slower than MiK

and quite possibly the worst of all...

  • I tested it to be 30% accurate

That's certainly not good enough for me.

Yo pulse!

there is a new version of Rapid evolution.. V 3.55

I didn't had to install a codec...  And of course that isn't necessary for key / bpm detection etc..

Also the UI perfect for me!

Check it out : http://www.mixshare.com/re3preview.html

I agree that it isn't the fastest program... But who cares about speed... My pc is most of the time turned on :)

And i'm not adding 100 new tracks to my collection every day..

check this out! : http://www.djtechtools.com/2012/01/26/key-detection-software-showdown-2012-edition/

Is that prove ?

I don't own MIK my self , but I did testings with a friend and it didn't prove that MIK was the best...

I did the test with MIK , RE , Virtual DJ , Beatport...  they all list a Key..

Maybe you can test it yourself ? :)

Anyway, If RE isn't as accurate as MIK (But it will come close)  ... I don't care.

You don't need to focus on the key only. I mix most of the time without looking to the key...

Just saying , For a free program its good enough ;)

Greetings

I'm using RE3.55 (beta) and it honestly was that bad.

I've been harmonic mixing for years (I was credited in the old MiK user manual for remaking the harmonic wheel to the new rainbow design) and I can key by ear, albeit slower than the software can, but I'm seldom wrong.  Over the years MiK has improved from 40% to around 95% accuracy.  If I'm doing mixes by key and I look at the key reference to pick my next song and it turns out that the tag was incorrect, my mix will sound horrible and that will just frustrate me, so yes, accuracy is important and for that, I'm willing to spend the money.
