I have been messing around with this mic problem for awhile now , trying to figure out a solution . I tried a few different Mics and they all sounded muffled when I had it hooked up to the Pioneer, so I then hooked up my Mic to my Denon dn-MC6000 and it sound perfect . ( Shure SM 58 ) The settings on both units were all set at noon . No Matter what settings I tried on the Pioneer , I could not get it to sound right at all . . So I went to the store and picked up a Mic Preamp and it actually made it worse on the Pioneer . Now if you remember when the American Audio VMS4 came out they were having the same issue , and their was no firmware that could fix this problem . Then eventually they built another controller to replace the VMS4 which is now called the VMS4.1 . So American DJ gave out these devices for free to all customers the had a VMS4 ( Line match Transformer ) 1/4 " on one side and XLR on the other with a switch to change it from Low to High . So I tried this on the Pioneer unit , and switched it to Low and then put all the settings between 10 & 11 o'clock . Works a lot better now ! Give it a try and let me know if this works for you also .
