CDJ900 cracked plastic display cover?

Hello. Been using a pair of CDJ900s for over a year now, no problems so far with CD playback and USB HID modes.

About 6 months of use, i noticed a small hairline crack appearing on the bottom center of the plastic display (for both units). Then a couple of months later, it started to creep up to the top of the display.  Now as of this writing, it looks like it's about to fall apart.  I also noticed the display panel is very hot every time.

I called our local Pioneer repair shop (Manila) and they said they can replace the plastic cover display.  But is there any way this won't happen again?  It's not practical to change the plastic display cover every year, LOL!

Brian

PS: I'll post a pic later of the damage.

@Brian > Sorry to hear of your issue; this seems weird and is the first I've heard of anything like it. Evidently, a picture would be great in helping us see your problem.

You are well within your warranty period so I would urge you to replace the cover ASAP.

Here's the pic of the damaged plastic display cover.  This is not due to a impact force - it simply appeared over time.  The plastic also feels hot to touch when on.

Here's a another closer look, notice the tree-like branch pattern emanating from the bottom center of the plastic panel.

@Brian > Thats very weird - also, you say the unit runs hot... Do you keep them in a flight case / warm atmosphere?

Regardless, please take your units to get repaired ASAP.

Well, the club is airconditioned, and they haven't been placed in flight cases ever.  Just on table top.  But i have a rubber mat underneath them to absorb vibrations to prevent CD skipping.  Do you think that might be contributing to the heat?  maybe radiating it upwards?

@Brian > Did you purchase them within your region?

I'm just wondering if they are suppose to be used with a different voltage than supported in your area?

i.e. you bought them from the U.S. online, and you're located in the U.K.

I'm located in Manila, they were purchased locally from an authorized dealer, power's 220volts here.

Been using it for over a year with no problems other than this.. if it was running on wrong voltage it would've either fried the unit or it won't turn on at all.

@Brian > Thanks, I was just making sure. That is extremely odd, and I'm with Gavin on this, I've never seen anything like it!

You mentioned you saw hairline cracks on both units?

Unfortunately the warranty period is only 1 year, so I don't believe it would be covered.

Yes it would, but I believe it could also have the players "run hot" at a breaking point if you were lucky. (In a way it would be unlucky too lol) I'm not 100% sure though, it was just to double check. :)

yes it started as small tiny cracks at the bottom, then it travelled upwards like a tree pattern.

Will take them to repairs and see what's inside that's putting stress on the plastic.    The plastic cover replacements are cheap, around $14 each. But i fear it might happen again.

@Brian > I can't imagine the rubber mats are contributing to the damage. Are you the only one using the units (do they belong to you or the club)?

I would love if you could let us know what the tech centre say.

It belongs to the club where i am a partner, i am present most of the time when they are being used , only about 4-5 rotating Djs have used it.

At first i thought something heavy was dropped on them, but they appeared on the 2 units at the same time, both irror the same plastic damage.

I will let you know how it goes, as of now i can't pull it out yet bec it's being used.

I've never seen this before -- are you absolutely certain a DJ wasn't doing hand-stands on the CDJs?  ;)

haha! No!  At first i thought something had dropped on top of it, but both decks displayed the same damage (also same tree -like pattern) so it couldn't been done deliberately .

That's truly bizarre ... I can't think of heat doing that though, it's just weird!  Have you contacted tech support to see what they have to say?

Why could it not have been done deliberately?  sure looks that way,  i cant imagine this will fall under warranty..

Not sure, but the smoke machines are outside the booth.  Do you think it affects it?  The whole club has many plastic stuff and they don't suffer this kind of damage.

I'm pretty sure these aren't deliberately caused.  I'm mostly around when they are in use.

I purchased 2 pioneer cdj 900s one from the UK, one from the USA, unfortunately I have this same issue, I cant send the deck back to the USA the mailing cost would be ridiculous, Where can I buy the glass or plastic panel, I also have the hairline cracks on both of my Decks, no idea how they appeared. any help on this or suggestions are welcome.

@Mikee > Are your units exposed in a similar fashion to those of Brian...?

You should contact technical support - they should be able to point you in the right direction. Links are on the right >>

Finally someone with the same issue! all i can really think of is the heat that the display gives off.  it's really hot.

The cracks appeared when i didn't have cases, I now have cases for them, I have made sure there is plenty of ventilation if I ever use them in the cases ( I put the decks on four coasters to allow air to get underneath, I have only done this for 15 mins for you tube videos) when ever else they are in use they are sat next to a djm 2000 mixer. that cannot produce heat to crack the screen. here are two pictures one of each deck. I believe this is the beginning of what has happened to Brain. These decks are nowhere near heat and have only been used  at home. Brain is it possible for you to send a link to where you can buy the screen, I am being charged £40 for each deck to be looked at without repairs. I am having a nightmare.

I did contact the pioneer service centre in Bradford England and they told me it would cost me £40 to look at the decks to see what was needed, Sorry Brian for calling you brain in the previous comment. I like Brian would like to know what can be done to prevent this from happening, they cost enough to buy without having to fork out more money to maintain them. Helpppppppp !!!!!

I haven't brought the units to the shop yet due to the units still being used. will probably setup an S4 traktor controller instead for the meantime.

MikeeGemini -  Regarding the cracks - it's a little different from mine,  Mine appeared with multiple hairline cracks that got bigger over time.  yours is just one crack in the middle.  But it seems it came from the bottom middle part of the plastic screen, same as mine.

Anyway the shop told me it would cost about $15 per plastic panel. not bad. but i still have to order them, it will take about 3 weeks.

can you give me a link or a contact number to the shop where your getting them from, I don't mind waiting. I am not getting anywhere fast, thanks for your help. its a pain in the ass being without your decks, your lucky you got an S4, was looking at a cdj 2000 in the meantime, but I am a little scared now due to service, I just bought a pioneer djm 2000 I hope nothing goes wrong with that I would cry. thanks
