pitch tempos and beat matching.

Hi all

Ive just purchased a pair of cdj 900s and would like to better understand the pitch meanings and benefits of using the certain settings.

6 10 16 and wide are the available range but i dont know which is best for mixing with. ive experimented with each and some appear the same some a bit difficult. I tend to use my ear but i find the bpm counter can be a help if u want to quikly match songs up, but sometimes this can be hard. is this down to tempo settings or the fact im just starting with cdjs. to my deffence i have been on the for 3 days straight playing a mixture of tech-house, techno and minimal but would like to make some flawless mixes to upload to soundcloud and hopefully make a apearance in the djing world in the future lol :D

The different settings are for if you need to mix songs with a wider gap (eg 140 BPM to 120) - if all of your songs are generally in the same range then the smaller the range the better, as the slider will be a bit more precise that way.

The master tempo button keeps the song staying at the same pitch (key) even when you adjust the tempo of it. If it's off, the key will adjust with the tempo, like a record (if you speed it up, vocals will sound high pitched)

+/-6% is best to use because it is more accurate.  If you slide the pitch, you will see the number increase from 0... 0.02, 0.04, 0.06 etc.  If you use +/-10%, the pitch increases are larger... 0.05, 0.10, 0.15 etc.  Smaller pitch increases mean for more accurate beat matching.  If you need to move to a wider pitch range to mix a track, then you can do so.  Those occasions should be pretty rare though.

thanks 4 the info. seems alot more accurate on +6 but still fine with the others, i find using the ears works the best when the digits dont match on the bpm counter, but tend to use the counter only when beatmatching to the point i will start using the headphones. cheers for the speedy replies ;)

You will gain a lot more respect as a DJ if you learn to rely on your ears rather than BPM counters.

out of interest  would it be better to mix live in +6 or + 10 on the decks . i understand +6 is more accurate bute sometimes i find using +10 to stay in beat sometimes more effectively, id love some feedback just to get the last piece of info to get me on the straigt and narrow. cheers peeps

Adrian, Its what ever works for you mate. If your mixing seams better with +10 then stick with that, just have a play around and see whats best for you.

Good luck.

I always use 6% for the accuracy.  Any mixes that need more than 6% can just have another track wedged between them.

cheers ken will do. yea pulse +6 v good for acuracy but overall i prefer 10, i think only because when mixing in that setting the quality sounded better but perhaps my ears still need more training but ive been told im very accurate most of the time. I suppose ill experiment more and just see what works should be getting gigs through the summer playing tech house n techno so am really training for it . really enjoying it i must say :)

I was just asking the same thing, I tried the 6% and found it drifted as it was more prcise, but was told that a few other DJ's use 10% and it can be easier to get a track locked, which i automatically thought 6% would be more accurate, but it seems that it needs alot of nudging to get it to stay in...?

Thanks!

Also would VINYL or CDJ mode make a difference to the platter and pitch bending to get in beat?

I was brought up on ONLY the CDJ mode on the earlier models, but was trying to use Vinyl mode.

Does Vinyl mode alter the platter movement at all? in order to nudge tracks in beat?
