Pre-purchase set-up questions: CDJ2000nxs

Folks,

Only been mixing just over a year so please go easy on my hardware ignorance, I'm still learning.

First question: I use a Xone DB4 and Traktor, and I'm looking to purchase a couple of CDJ2000nxs due to their Traktor certified status so I can use them as a full control surface, integrated into Traktor.

Can you tell me how this is connected, please? Am I right in thinking that I'd use the digital outputs from the CDJ's and go into the digital inputs of the DB4, use the DB4 as the audio device in Traktor setting, and everything plays nicely with the CDJ's controlling Traktor 2.6?

Second question: Does operating the hot cues via the CDJ operate as they usually do through Traktor? ie, hold down a cue button and the track plays until you lift off that button? This is a function that currently doesn't work when using timecode, and I'm keen to get it back. As the CDJ is certified I'm hoping it does.

Many thanks in advance.

First question - yes you are totally correct. you also need to connect both cdjs via usb to your laptop running traktor. your db4 will be connected via usb to your laptop too so you'll need 3 usb ports or a powered hub.

i've not used traktor for a while so can't be sure about your second question.

i would say though (as i have this same setup), if you buy the 2000nxs and have the db4 then you probably won't ever want to fire up tractor again!

Thanks a lot Phil. So USB connectivity for the CDJ's is still required? Okay, didn't expect that (I assumed USB would be needed if wanting to select the CDJ's as the audio device in Traktor) but thanks.

Point taken on the potential of losing Traktor! Still got a lot to learn, though.

If anyone would know the answer to the cue point question, I'd appreciate.

Cheers.

Same type of functionality.

I want to add that I was a big Traktor user, but after getting the DCJ 2000Nexus' I stopped using it. I can do a lot of what I used to depend on Traktor/other hardware for and I don't have to hook up a bunch of extra gear. I was using Traktor w/Macbook Pro, MidiFighter 3D, Kontrol F1, Maschine and some other gear. Now I don't have to lug all of that around, it doesn't crash, and I don't have to hook it all up and hope it all works correctly. You won't have 100% of the options you have with all of that hardware, but you still have more than enough to do plenty, without all of the headaches.

I currently use 2 - CDJ 2000 Nexus, DJM 900 Nexus, and RMX 1000 and I've had no regrets about the switch. There's also the part about most venues using this hardware as the standard. Imagine going from all of the hardware I previously used and lugging that around to only 4 pieces of hardware and/or just a USB drive. Doesn't get easier than that.

Thanks Smashy, for confirming the cue point behaviour in Traktor.

General comment now, seeing as my questions have been answered: two out of two people have said that once purchasing these CDJ's they've ditched Traktor - I'm curious as to how / why buying this equipment brings this decision out? How have those that have done this found the transition?

I must admit that I've thought the same (since thinking seriously about the 2k's), and at least purchasing these CDJ's gives me that opportunity, but currently I feel that I depend on Traktor and couldn't see how I'd work without it.

Must admit, though, I'm looking forward to getting a pair of 2k's.

So you don't have to shove your face in a laptop on the stage!

For the exact reason you just specified. There are a ton of "DJs" out there that are totally lost if they don't have their laptop to bury their face in. Software is a great tool that many people have become way too dependent on. As I say to every new person getting into spinning...  do yourself a favor and get your hands on some vinyl and TT's. Master those, and it will make you even a better DJ than you are. I am not saying that is the only way to go, but it gives you appreciation for new gear, and I fell it let's you utilize the new tools available even more. :)

Did the same thing, bought the 2000's 3 years ago and havent touched serato or traktor since, so much better getting back to mixing without staring at a laptop, Not saying it's a bad thing to use serato or traktor, but since the 2000's, I will never use software like that again, A lot more fun IMO getting away from the laptop.

@Kieron > I think you'll be very happy with the Nexus players. The most recent firmware really tightened up the bugs and rekordbox is its most stable yet.

Luck is what I'll be needing, because with the price of them, my bank manager isn't going to be happy with my account soon.
