[SOLVED] Problem with Serato's HID Pitch Implemenation

I have posted this bug on the Serato forums and I am hoping to get some more traction on this.  For some reason Serato has decided to deviate on the pitch % increments when using ScratchLive with the CDJ-900 in HID mode.  If you notice, when you select +/- 6 as your pitch fader range on a stock CDJ, you'll notice that the pitch increments change in 0.02% intervals - this has been like this for as long as I've used them and it has worked great.

For some reason when Serato added the HID integration for the 900s, and you select +/- 6% as your pitch fader range, they decided to use 0.015% as the interval - maybe thinking that it would give you finer adjustments?  Well, unfortunately that comes at a cost of the pitch fader becoming overly sensitive.  I have noticed that pitch values change on their own (due to vibration or even using the jog wheel) and have found pitch adjustment to be jumpy and more difficult to zero in on a value because it slides too easily past the value I want.

What bothers me is Pioneer had it dialed in with the 0.02% pitch increment in non-HID mode - it was great, works awesome - it's the friggin' industry standard!  I don't get why they messed with that.  I would venture to guess that this also affects other CDJ decks, but I only have the 900 so hopefully someone else can verify this.

I have posted up a thread on the Serato forums and if you're using a CDJ with Serato and have also noticed the same thing, please chime in and ask that Serato support the CDJ in a transparent manner that keeps the pitch functionality true to the way Pioneer designed it!

@Mike > Thanks for posting - I've taken the time to read the full Serato thread too and the rep there has hit most of the information you are looking for - we will continue to push for greater improvements as is possible within the limitations of hardware and software.

I really hope they look into it.  Yesterday I was recording a mix and the pitch shifted from 0.02 to 0.00 THREE TIMES after I reset it - all within about 40 seconds and I wasn't even touching the deck while it changed!  This is just unacceptable.  I've examined all the data that the pitch slider spits out on USB and there's gobs of data points to work with so this is all about how they're doing the math in ScratchLive.  Plus, I know that ScratchLive can set the deck to whatever it wants to because if I instant double a track, it completely overrides the pitch slider and sets the deck to the same pitch as the other deck.  This is not a limitation on the hardware by any means and has everything to do with how they programmed the software.  This is not representative of the robustness of the CDJ system and I hope that Pioneer can help convince Serato to tweak the code so that the pitch system is in line with the industry standard pitch values that have become known by all DJs using these decks.

thanks!

If memory serves me correctly, they have been aware of this issue with a while but sorting out the bug would require a large rewrite of the software.

Yes, it's been over a year.

I don't believe that it's a huge rewrite - they just need to change the factor that they're dividing by.  I was able to scale the same 986 data points that are spit out via USB into to 0.02 increments in Excel and it just involves some rounding and an EVEN function - this should be trivial for their programmers.

And to take this even further, this shouldn't even be tolerated!  This affects the core functionality of the CDJ and horribly misrepresents the controller.  I had the pitch change on it's own from 0.00 to 0.02 after resetting it THREE TIMES WITHIN 30 SECONDS!!  That just isn't acceptable when you're trying to get a seamless mix.

Martin, the Serato rep, specifically said for more people to comment on this thread so that it would get Serato's attention.  So it would be great if we could rally the CDJ supporters to get Serato to fix this problem!

Thanks!

yeah, I'm just trying to rally as much support as possible to make the CDJ experience with ScratchLive just as good as without it.  I just need more people to chime in on this otherwise it'll sit for another year with no changes.

Your efforts will be best directed to Serato for those changes, not Pioneer.
