1 Player, Multiple Decks? Sorta...

I'm trying to be able to control 2-4 decks in traktor with 1 CDJ in either HID or Midi Mode. midi mode is a last resort because it's time/labor intensive to set up and map out, as well as losing the ability to browse my computer's library.

So far everything works as expected, except for 1 major detail: the ability to easily switch decks. Here's what I've done so far, hopefully the many helpful members of this forums can shed some insight on my situation:

Enter controller editor, open the CDJ900NXS entry, see all of the mappings; attempt to change 1 button (ex. beat divide 3/4) to: Deck Focus selector. This allows me to cycle through decks ABCD with the press of a button. Sounds ideal, right? Unfortunately, cue/play & the jog wheel still only interact with the deck first assigned after linking the cdj to traktor. However, everything else controls whatever deck I'm focused on (loops/hotcues/etc).

This seems very close to what I want, however I cannot find a mapping entry related to the jog wheel in order to edit it, and when I try to "add in" and 'learn' the input, the dropdown next to learn states "Not assignable". I just hope I'm doing this wrong and overlooking something important, because it's the most promising possible solution. I've tried mapping "Jog Turn" and "Seek Position" to the jog wheel as well, in case it was just a matter of the correct function being compatible with the type of knob, but still receive the same "Not Assignable" error.

I've been able to reliably re-select my "deck focus" by turning the cdj off/on (it also works by unplugging the cdj's usb and then plugging it back in), however this is a cumbersome and risky setup, because of not only the possibility of failure/errors in the reboot process, but also the time it takes for the cdj to reboot when timing is critical for my fast-paced and frequently layered sets. And that is all aside from the inability to quickly make adjustments between the playing/cue'd tracks.

If there was a means of switching decks on the fly inside of the cdj -or- traktor without having to restart/replug, this would solve my problem and make my setup viable. As it stands, it's almost easier to just mix on my Z2 and leave the digger out, but that would be a huge waste of a pretty awesome and expensive piece of gear. Not to mention it doesn't do much for showmanship in smaller venues to only have a mixer in front of you with sync on 100% of the time. I should mention that google has been of little help in anything other than finding posts from 2-5 years ago with vaguely related issues. I hope some things may have changed this far down the road.

I greatly appreciate any input you may have, and sincerely hope I am not out of luck on this matter.

Big ups,

-DL

With MIDI this was easy because mapping the EJECT button to "switch focus" allowed you to control multiple virtual decks with one hardware CDJ. The important thing to note is that all of your mappings must be targeting the focus, not a deck letter (A, B, C, D).

Unfortunately with HID, you are "locked" into control of that player once you select it. I can't off the top of my head remember if you can use the BACK button to go to the top level of the menu to then select another player -- or if Traktor even supports it.

You could end up using the Z2 and a CDJ and another controller (like an F1 or X1), that would give you additional control.
