Believe it or not, I had to get out my iPod and try it to be able to answer you with conviction...
My hunch was "yes" as the iPod Classic (mine is an 80GB) has always been detected on other Pioneer players (CDJs, MEP) so after testing I can tell you that unfortunately, you must use it in hard-drive mode in order to view the contents. I was able to view the calendar and contact folders, but not the music therein. Sorry!
