What Data does RB store in the Audio File (Tag)?

Hy,

just wondering what data is stored in the tag of the audiofile and what data is stored in the external library.

in Serato all data, cues, Loops, grids, etc. and the waveform is stored in the Audio file directly.

in Traktor all Data is stored in the file except the waveform that is stored in external library.

how does Traktor handle this?

would be very interesting for me since i use different machines to prepare my files in the dj programs to merge them later on my dj Laptop.

big thx in advance for your answer!

As far as I'm correct, the only thing Rekordbox stores in the MP3 is the Artist, Title, ... and "Comment" (you can have the "My Tag" information written in Comments, this is an option in the setup). All the rest is in the RB library.

Are you sure Serato is writing cues, loops, grids in the file? This is interesting! Yesterday I've tried to migrate from RB to Serato.  Interesting that I've written the My Tag (which I use for playlist categorizing) into the audiofile. This helps having the same playlist structure in Serato as in RB (smart crates in serato - intelligent playlist in RB)

thx for your Reply!

yes i'm shure about what serato and Traktor is writing into the tags since i work nearly every day with them :-)

the way serato handles the meta data is the easiest since all is stored in the Audio file and no reanalyzing on the dj Workstation is requiered.

i think i'll take a look into my rb analyzed files meta data to see what it stored. can't imagine that only Standard data is stored into the file.

a lot of the data is stored in a few spots I believe, in PIONEERS ~/Library/Pioneer datafile.edb file and in USBANLZ folder for the waveforms date

wish they stored right to the file like serato, would make things so much easier and less issues

Ok... thanks for the info. You don't want to know how many hours in my life I've spent re-analysing tracks for one reason or another. If it were IN THE FILE ... #LetsInstallThisSoftwareASAP :p

just played around with some rb analyzed files and shit.. no grid data, no cuepoints or waveform is stored in the files metadata :-(

as brichi wrote: the metadata is stored in the *.edb file and the waveforms are in  USBANLZ.

so no chance to analyze files on different machines and transfer them for example via network to the (main)dj workstation. i use many different machines to analyze my files for Traktor and Serato and just copy the files via lan to my dj laptop. with serato you have all needed metadata directly in the file, with Traktor the main dj workstation only has to generate the waveform for the local taktor database.

any idea how to get a proper workflow for this problem?

I applaud rekorDBox for NOT storing things in the audio file. I'm pretty mad at Traktor for changing my music files without telling me and then not having a way to remove anything it added. I don't care if I will never notice the tags, its my files not Traktors!

they are storing to an area of the file meant for storage, and it is removable by 3rd party programs like "Tag Stripper" to remove metadata that Traktor added if you wanted to

I find it more convenient to let them add the data to my file then have the program have to look at 3 different area overtime i load a track between the location, waveform and memory points. This could explain why every once in a while my waveform on the CDJ is different from the track its playing, too many different places they store info but i doubt they will ever change it so oh well

Well, googling "tag stripper" comes up with some interesting finds. I'll bookmark some of those. But back on topic, I'll look into something to remove the tags.

When I moved my Traktor library from PC to Mac, it was no much work I don't see the tags had a lot to do with it. Keeping the library files in sync was a lot of work.

True @Bryan... analysing with Traktor indeed isn't a lot of work. But don't expect the same story on Rekordbox.  For non-dance music, setting the beatgrids are LOTS of work. And you have no other option than setting them correct, or everything will sound like you in your young vynil deejay years :-) I've been beatgridding for the last 2 months (hours a day) and the last thing I want to loose right now, is that beatgrid. I'm so PRO to store it in the music file!

I only have steady 4/4 kick drum music and even then RB will start on the wrong step or be slightly off tempo sometimes. Perhaps Traktor is a better guesser. I don't even want to think about analyzing less predictable music!
