My Set up is a Mess..!

Hi Guys,

Never posted on here before so here it goes...

Set up -  2 x CDJ2000 Nexus

               1 x DJM900 Nexus

Linked up to to a USB hub which is then connected to my iMac 27" late 2012.

No RCA's in sight gone for full digital instead, sound pumping out of 2 x Krk's 6"

I currently have Rekordbox(latest addition) with performance subscription.

So that's my set up, this is my problem...

I thought By buying the subscription on Rekordbox I could select a track from my library, drag it on to one of the turntables on the iMac then it would load on to the CDJ so then I can manipulate the track with my CDJ. Like Serato but with out the Box.  If I am right and it is suppose to do this then some how I can not get it to work.  Or am I totally wrong on this and this is NOT what Rekordbox is for?

Also when in Export mode I CAN select a track and drag it down to the CDJ's on the bottom on the page( using pro link) and this will then load on to the CDJ. But then I have another problem, I would like to record my mix, which I notice you can do in performance. By Switching from Export to Performance it says that the DJpro link will be disconnected. Is this normal ?  Also when I select a track and drag in on to the turntable(In Performance) all it does is just load on the turntable on the iMac and not on the CDJ.  Why ? (I've selected the rekordbox button on the CDJ)

Then to top it all off I downloaded Audacity to record my mix but for some reason the left hand deck has a nice clean signal but on the right.....Nothing, no signal whats so ever..I have sound coming from both CDJ's out of the speakers but only one channel is recording. I tried all the settings, tried searching for any clues online but nothing..

I know this might Sound stupid but I really don't know, I was afraid to post at first just incase I sounded like an idiot but I got no choice now, I'm totally stuck.

So I got 2 days off work and i'm dedicating it to sorting this out and trying to get my mix down on USB to throw round some bars or clubs.

Hope i've made sense, bloody hard try to explain it ..LOL !

Any way thanks for reading, hope you can throw us in the right direction !

Cheers

i'm going to guess that you need to set it up as a midi type connection.  USB 2 cable from the mixer to the pc.  Your CDJ's will control the music but not actually load a track into it.  I'm using a DDJRZ and that's how it works with Rekordbox DJ.  In midi mode the recording works through Rekordbox to record the mixes to your hard drive.

The pro link works in export mode, it's the traditional way of using rb (up to version 3): either you upload your music on usb sticks or you send it to the cdj via pro link on ethernet/wi fi and then you can control everything from the CDJs.

When you go to performance mode, rb dj acts (or at least should ;) ...) like any traditional dj software (serato, traktor...) and the music and control over the cdjs goes via the USB HID interface, therefore the pro link is disconnected automatically when you go into performance mode.

On the CDJ in order to connect to the djing performance software you should push the Link button, not the rekordbox button, to link to the djing software (here I'm not 100% sure because I tried rb dj only once, but generally with traktor and the other programs you need to use the link button). Then on the display of the CDJ you'll see a menu asking you how you want to connect (other cdj or djing software, which deck in the dj software etc.), the menu will be slightly different for serato, traktor or rb dj, but it should be easy to understand.

About recording the mix with rb dj, I guess the correct source for the recording is the mixer. From how you describe the results with audacity, it seems that you are recording from one cdj only, so probably you should try selecting the mixer as source for audacity. I think that if you manage to setup rb dj correctly you don't need audacity to record, however you might prefer to use audacity anyway because for sure it gives more control over the recording than any djing software.

Also it's important that before you fire up any program (audacity, rb dj, serato...) you launch the CDJ aggregator utility, this helps a lot to avoid the mess with which audio interface is on which deck and so on.

His thank for your in put, I've been up since 7 this morning trying to figure it out, By reading your comment and other peoples I think i have sorted it out but still have one issue.

I think My problem was that connecting my cdj's to my iMac via Either net cable and Hub.(pro link)

But what i tried now is connecting usb cables from the cdj's to a usb hub then connecting that to the iMac. This seems to get me connected to Rekordbox in performance & now I can record my mix but  I can only get sound to record out of channel 1&2.  I usually use channel 1 & 4. I've tried changing  channels on the mixer  and on the CDJ but nothing.

This not a problem as I just wanted to record my mix then process it with another software.  As normally I use USB's for my set

I must be getting old as Technology is getting more and more confusing. lol

Thanks for all your replies guys

Take care

my friend i know exactly where your comming from on this one. Early on i managed to sort out cabling, aggregations etc. My issue was when upgrading to RB4. I have a djm 2000 and it has a huge amount of features that i can only use in export mode. For instance when in link mode the djm 2000 icon apears and i can drag and drop samples straight to the mixer, likewise tracks into cdjs. Now i know the idea of RB$ is to negate the drag and drop into a cdj but now my sample bank is kind of redundant as i cant work out how to load them on to my djm 2000. I love all the features of RB4 but in some way i feel a little cheated after paying so much for the set up and only able to use the features if i go back to RB3 or link mode. Also i can not now link monitor in performance mode. Now i am no techno guru if there is a way of achieving this then i apologise.

Well I think It's all sorted now, I've ordered a USB 3 Hub Plus better cables, for quality purposes.  Using the iMac as a Midi throws me off somewhat when I'm mixing as i'm used to using usb's sticks but It saves a lot of time instead if loading all my music on to the USB's all the time.  I managed to make a mix by using Rekordbox and I got to say the Quality is Sweet as hell, so crisp it's unreal.   Seems to have a higher clarity then Audacity.

Cheers fellas !
