Why do i always have an issue with CDJ platters not cueing properly?

So I've been growing more and more comfortable over the years with CDJs, and last month I switched to Rekordbox from Tractor and got an XDJ-RX for home use. Works a treat... but after a few more gigs, I realized I seem to often have an issue out in the field when i try to use a CDJ2000 platter to cue and release in vinyl mode, like a record. It seems to often just stop the track when i release, like I would expect if its not actually in vinyl mode, but I've checked and thats not the case. It just stops the tune, and i end up using the cue/start buttons instead. My XDJ unit works fine this way.  Am I often dealing with CDJs that been abused and have malfunctioning platters or is there another setting I'm not aware of that causes this?
