DJM800 - recording live DJ set into portable recorder (overmodulated)

Hello,

I would like to record DJ set from DJM800. I tried it several times in the past using ZOOM H4n and RCA outs (rec outs).

But sometimes dj sets were really overmulated, even if the input gain of ZOOM was like -20dB. The result was -20dB quite, but the signal was totaly distorted / overmodulated.

I know, that some DJs play into CLIP, so they have like +2clip on master bus.

But there is no noticable distortion in the club PA speakers or DJ monitors.

How it is possible, that the master output with clip is not distored in the speakers and rec out is totaly not useful and recording is totaly overmodulated?

How to prevent this?
Now I have ZOOM H6, which has 4inputs, so I can record 2 different stereo levels simultaneously.  I am thinking about to use rec outs + master 2 and set different levels in recorder, but if it will be alredy overmodulated in the mixer, it will not help me.

Is there any TRIM to TRIM the recording out volume for the recorder? To reach more headroom for the recorder evenif the DJ will play +2clip ?

The REC OUT level is not effected by the Master Volume knob.  I would trying turning down the trim on each channel to ensure the channels are not peaking.

So it means, that masterbus is not a problem, but each line's gain control of every fader makes the problem? For example when dj is mixing 2tracks and both are clipping it will also do the summ of the both clipping tracks and the result is even worse.

Ok, so then we have to remark to djs not to higher the gain and keep the level of the gain of each track at some safe peak level.

Thanks for advice!

Do you know if the same works for DJM900 / nexus and 2000?

Yes, this is the same on all mixers with a REC OUT.  DJ's should never be hitting the red lights on the mixer.  Not on the channel or on the master.  Stay in the yellow/orange to ensure there is no peaking.

I know this as I am also DJ, but many drunked guys playing the main performances do not keep this rule. We will print some stickers to alert them to avoid this.

The another way would be to use some analog limiter before the recorder or to use Sounddevices or any other PRO device with analog limiters, which can prevent digital cliping in the recording, but it is not 100% solution, because the sound will be affected and it cannot prevent any hard-clipping coming out of the mixer.
