With rekordbox 2.x, a license key was required as rekordbox was a paid software at that time - the XDJ-R1 shipped with a key to unlock it.
As of version 3, rekordbox was made available for free, and continues to be free to this day. With rekordbox 4, we introduced the "dj" plus-pack (also known as "Performance Mode"), which does require an additional purchase if you did not receive a key with a compatible product.
The rekordbox 2 key is not valid for use with rekordbox dj, and you will need to purchase a license if you want to use rekordbox in performance mode. You can still use rekordbox in EXPORT mode for free to prepare your music to export to a USB device for your R1.
