Hi,
I've had the RX2 for 8 months now and have been experiencing all kinds of USB dive issues since the very beginning. I was able to put up with it for a little while, but now I am at the point where I am thinking about selling the unit if I am unable to resolve this...
I have used a variety of different flash drives. Initially when I purchased the XDJ-RX2, all of my usb drives (3 of them), which were formatted under Mac OS X Extended were working just fine, although not always on the first try - for example, I would plug in the USB, the RX2 would give me an error message (no USB found), then after hitting the USB button once or twice, it would actually read it and work fine. Buggy and annoying...but it worked.
The drives were 2 x 128GB and 1 x 64GB Patriot Supersonic Rage. It's important to note that with all of these drives, I never had issues (to this day) when playing at the club at CDJ 2000's, 2000NXS's, and 2000NXS2's.
After a while, I started having bigger problems with one of the drives and then another one. I kept getting messages that there was no Rekordbox database - Rekordbox (on my laptop) would read the drives fine, CDJ's would read them fine, so the problem was only with the RX2. I formatted one of them under FAT32 (losing all my old playlists in the process) and the problem seems to have been fixed, but FAT32 is extremely slow (takes 10 times+ longer than under OS X) when copying tracks to the USB stick, so I'd like to avoid that.
Most of my old playlists, however, reside on one of the OS X formatted drives and that seems to never work - the XDJ-RX2 just says there is no Rekordbox database and it shows the drive as being empty (no folders, no tracks, no playlists, nothing). Then I go to the club and the USB stick works just fine and I play with it for 6+ hours.
I re-formatted another similar drive to OS X and it worked fine in the beginning with 5-6 playlists. Then, when I started adding more, it crapped out as well.
I started doubting the integrity of the flash drives, so I purchased new ones. Brand new USB 3.0 128GB Samsung drives. I copied a ton of playlists on them and was eager to start using them with my XDJ-RX2. Alas, when I plugged them in, I kept getting the message - "No Rekordbox Database Found" and the drive appears empty on the XDJ-RX2, but again, it plays fine on CDJ's.
So...what exactly is causing this issue? The XDJ-RX2 costs a lot of money and is supposed to replicate the "club experience" of the NXS2 series. The whole idea of having such a piece of equipment at home is to be able to use it without a PC and use your flash drives, so you can practice for the club. Right now, all it's doing is giving me headache, because I've spent a lot of money upgrading flash drives, a lot of time re-organizing and copying playlists, and then I am unable to use them on the RX2.
I need Pioneer to come up with some potential reasons as to why this is happening - is it the size of the drives (128GB?); is it the firmware on the RX2 (upgraded to latest version); is it the Rekordbox software or a setting; is it something else? I REFUSE to believe this has to do with USB manufacturers - again, all of these drives work fine on CDJ's - and I have friends who use much cheaper drives without any issues.
I REFUSE TO FORMAT MY DRIVES UNDER FAT32, as they are extremely slow this way and copying a 10GB playlist literally takes half a day and locks up my Mac. It also makes no sense to do so, since Mac formatted OS X drives work perfectly fine on other equipment. This cannot be the answer, especially since the hardware manual states it should work fine with OS X drives.
I REFUSE TO BUY NEW FLASH DRIVES as well, because all of the ones I have (5 in total) work fine in a club setting.
PIONEER - what is the problem and how can we address it?
I feel really disappointed with this piece of equipment. When it works, it works great, but I cannot continue sweating over whether it will work or not and I cannot continue re-formatting, copying, moving, and dealing with this nonsense any longer.
