XDJ-XZ Beat Effects

Im new to the XDJ format and may be missing something fairly obvious but has anyone has any issues with the beat effects not working when using the controller with a USB ? Mine simply doesn't seem to be doing anything in the slightest and I'm hoping its something fairly obvious, any help would be wonderful!!!
