Connecting my XDJ-RX to a laptop

I've been using my RX for a few years via USB sticks but have just acquired a hard drive with thousands of tracks.

Rather than add them into Rekordbox and then export on to USB's I thought I would investigate ways that I can play tracks direct from my laptop (with connected HDD) however despite reading a number of historic posts I have had no success.

Is there a simple method of getting this to work or is the only option to add them as stated above and play via USB only?

Sorry if this is a basic question but I'm a novice when it comes to the technical side of these things so any help is greatly appreciated.

Playing songs directly from a USB drive is possible, but there is no searching, sorting, or additional display such as waveform or beat grid. To get those, you would need to import them to rekordbox, run the analysis then "export" them to the USB drive. (I say "export" because if they're already on that drive, it doesn't actually copy them to the drive again.)

So that I’m clear - does that mean I can’t use a laptop with rekordbox to load the tracks directly on to the controller like I see when DJ’s use a Nexus? If so that’s clearly where I am going wrong.

You sure can use Rekordbox while have it read music from an external drive and load them to your XDJ-RX.

You can access the music from left-hand-side panel > Explorer > HD name > Folders

But you will first need import them to collection in order to benefit from all the visual and performance features that Rekordbox offers.

Hope it helped

Cheers
