This unit is essentially new.
1) USB stop button has no effect.
2) Tracks will not load from USB drive. The folders read and nav fine, album cover image shows fine. Track hangs while loading and it just stays that way.
3) Tried to upgrade firmware, inserting USB drive gets no response from unit.
For the record, I'm a system builder, technophile, and DAW kinda-guru. I solve problems for a living. This is the first time in over 25 years I've had to post anywhere asking for help. This one has me stumped. Stumped, I tells ya.
Windows. Several flash drives used. Music in root. Firmware in root. Chrome and Firefox used for firmware DLs. FAT32. MBR. Yadda yadda.
All attempts to research and remedy fruitless. The fact that I'm getting some data from my tracks leads me to think the USB port itself is OK.

... what is the actual firmware version of your player? If you are already on 1.42 this is already the latest version.
... you have to press USB stop for a few seconds to take effect.
... what audiio format are you using for your tracks? Did you try to use some other format, e.g. uncompressed aiff or wav?

I don't have the miserable thing in front of me at the moment, but I'm quite confident it was v1.2. I do know for certain that I would never attempt to needlessly update firmware - I study the matter and double confirm before messin' with stuff.
I indeed pressed USB stop for a few seconds on some attempts and quite a bit more than a few seconds on others. I don't do things without knowing what I'm.....ah, you prolly get it by now ;)
I believe all the files I was trying were MP3, but given the other difficulties, it's pretty close to mind-blowing to even begin to imagine a different format making a difference. I'll throw a different format at it when I get a moment.
If that somehow solves this you likely won't be hearing back from me, for I expect I'll drop dead from sheer astonishment.
One would think the USB A port is defective, but it's been used so little and the successful reading of folder and album cover data suggests otherwise. I've seen a few threads with a similar problem, but none that were resolved.

Tried WAV. One thing different - on the first WAV file, instead of hanging on blinking red NOW LOADING--- I got E-8302: CANNOT PLAY TRACK(000B)
Selecting the next WAV file resulted in the familiar NOW LOADING--- hang.
In service mode I see is 16 errors....13 x E-8302 USB, 2 x E-8302, and 1 x E-8305 USB. I've a funny feeling that's of significance.
After a factory reset and one more try to load track, i got the same E-8302 error. Going to service mode and the cleared error history there is now 1. E-8302 USB.
AUTO DEVICE CHECK had OK x 4, looks good.
Interestingly, holding down the USB STOP makes the port blink faster in two stages - a bit faster, then a bit more to about 3 per second. More pressing of USB STOP has no effect and I can navigate thru track list but can't select a track (to fail to load, LOL).
Power off and start over.....
If I had one guess, I'd say the USB controller, not the port is the culprit, but I'm far from confident of that. It's worth noting, though, that the orientation/angle of the USB port invites attempts to insert a thumb drive at a bad angle, putting much more strain on the port than with a more straightforward approach like found on the edge of a laptop. This unit has such little use and the USB port appears rigid and in good condition, so I don't really know what to think.
