Why is pitch resolution only 0.5% on Wide?
This is relevant on both the CDJ900, 2000, and XDJ 1000s, but I figure more people look at the CDJ section.
14bit faders can do better than 0.1% pitch resolution at 100% range. I do this quite frequently on software. On my upstairs desktop practice system, I've got 14bit MIDI controllers that cost 50 bucks each that can do that with ease.
My variously-branded Hanpin multi-format media players (which I have 11 of) can all do exactly 0.1% at 100% range.
I've been considering getting some used CDJ900s to have for open deck nights, since a lot of these new laptards, as I call them, can't use their ears and can't use vinyl or the Hanpin media players I have. They're soft, lazy, and need the automation, and I need to get bodies into the venue, which means booking as many of them per night to have them drag their gfs and buddies out.
I can't justify spending over a grand for a pair of used CDJ900s if they can only do 0.5% resolution at 100%. On another venue's NXS2s when I guest DJ there, I stay away from doing anything too daring as a result of that because I have to keep nudging every few seconds. If my regular venue wanted to buy the 900s, fine, but I can't do much with 0.5% when I need to pitch beyond 16%. It's like it's meant as a crude utility mode for scratch artists, but is pretty useless for mixing. I'm not shelling out my own cash for that.
Where is this goofy limitation on newer Pioneer transports coming from? Certainly Pioneer is not using less than 14bit faders, right? My regular venue has the old CDJ1000mk3s we occasionally break out for Serato people and bigger names still on discs, and those do the acceptable 0.1 increments on Wide.
